When You Start To Feel Things Aren't As Good..

i am sure there are some places where we like them so much during our first few visits, that we do not mind going back again and again.. and probably after a number of times, we start to find things seem to be not as good as they were.. in such a case, do you start blaming the quality drops, or a different person doing it, or your taste has changed, or do you think it could be due to yourself getting used to it and thus there is nothing new to excite?? the set of photos below was taken at an eatery i used to frequently patronize when i was still with my ex-ex-company, but this time i only find the pork chop is as good.. so, i must be experiencing what i described above, what kind of problem do you think my case belongs to?? :)

How today's interactive post works:
  • Click on the letter buttons to SLIDE between the photos of food
  • The last in the set is an interactive map where you can locate the restaurant
  • Note: May not work properly if your browser is one of the legacy versions that does not support HTML5/CSS3 - update your white elephant lah please!! :D

  1. Guess is depends what, depends on the person who cook, you might felt a bit different if you long time no eat, but sometimes can be the same as usual...

    1. And also have to depends on the chef, maybe she/he not in the good mood that day, so taste differently!!

And...maybe that time you like taste like that, then who knows few months later you change your appetite taste!! Like human we can keep on changing our interest...应该是这样吧~~~

    2. yeah, so agree with what you have mentioned above.. i guess it's a mixture of all the factors or??

  2. Or maybe the chef is no more there and they change chef?

  3. Morning everyone and salam to all bloggers.. Today I’ll be on half day’s leave, will go back at 12.30pm.. So leh, today “poon siew cheh” is in a good mood.. Ahhh, so today is about “kiu choy sik farn” post.. Ok jugak, since it’s a makan-makan post, I like, and got things to write jugak..

    1. Yes, there is a place here which I do not mind going over and over again.. They are Burger Factory, Tappers and Bad Boys in Oasis.. All have something in common: they serve burgers and western food.. I like western food, and I don’t mind having it everyday for 3 months..

      Delete
    2. Si tau poh (lady boss) is a very yim chim person.. She always yim3 yim4 and achi achor (hate this kinda people), but since she is our “cheong pui” (elderly), we have to respect her.. So when she’s around, it’s always “kiu choy” , like your post, or noodles or tai chau, something like that.. When she’s not around, like when she’s on leave or could not join us for lunch, we’ll always go to my favourite place..

      Delete
    3. Burger Factory serve good burgers with large portion.. Now, they have set lunch too, but the portion is not very big.. Price is not cheap, but with the large portion, I don’t mind going back there once a week.. Tappers is one of my favourite place and I can really go there EVERYDAY for 3 months.. Their chicken chop and pasta very nice, we always order one chicken chop (each), then those sweet guys will order another Hainan chicken chop to share, coz he knows I’m a big fat eater, and one chicken chop is never enuff for me, teehee.. Bad Boys pulak offer similar stuffs, like chicken chop, pasta, rice, many more.. All also I like.. Jou yin ji, I love western la, and I will never get bored..

    4. Ok, back to your post before I run to Holland *scroll up to the food pictures again*

    5. Dish A looks very “hoi wai” wor, very “cheh farn” too, I guess you can eat 2 bowls of rice with this alone.. I don’t need the prawns and squid, only the sambal gravy also I very “hoi wai” liao lor.. If you ask me, I prefer the squid.. Prawns if got shell ahh, very malas one wor..

      Delete
    6. Dish B so-so lor.. I don’t like greens, so I don’t like veges, so that’s why I said so-so lor.. hehe.. But in every kiu-choy places, we will also order 1 or 2 greens la.. Si tau poh like ching chao kalian like you or tao miew.. These are the two favourite greens of hers.. Sometimes she likes “woo tau nai pak” too (yam with siew pak choy)..

      Delete
    7. Alright, come Dish C.. We seldom order fish when we go kiu-choy coz it’s expensive.. You know la, we go eat lunch only ma, in 4 or 5 ppl, no need order so mahal food.. Usually it’s just 1 meat like chicken or pork, then one vege, one claypot tofu and 1 foo yoong egg.. But if I want to order fish, I like “yau cham” fish.. (oil flood – direct translation)..

      Delete
    8. Ooohh, Dish D would be my favourite.. Coz I love meat, I love chicken chop, so it’s a combination of both.. Pork chop.. Looks very delicious.. Hainan chicken chop looks the same as this one.. Very big piece too.. Wet wet water for me, I can just poke the whole chunk with a fork, and finish the whole slab in 2 minutes! Slurrpp !

      Delete
    9. Lastly, to answer your question.. I would think it’s the “getting-used-to” issue la.. Bila tak dapat, rindu pulak.. But if dapat (everyday) already, you won’t miss that place so much liao lor.. Agree?

      Delete
    10. actually i always order these few dishes whenever i patronise this restaurant.. the first few times ah, i tell you, i was so impressed and like i've never eaten anything nicer before.. and so i always recommend friends to go there makan together.. last time our boss from SG when he comes to KL, we all sure will go there makan lunch one lor.. but now ah, dunno leh, other than the Hainanese Pork Chop, all the other dishes like "jaang gam sit" (a little bit less) like that lor.. that's why i wrote this post, haha!! :D

Eh you like western food ar? Me too, but cannot afford to eat often, cause I gain weight very fast one, haha! May be once every 2 weeks ok la! Mummy you petite so no problem ;)

I especially love chicken chop, and fries! Burgers too! So far for burgers, not many choices at my hometown, those in the fast food outlets like KFC/McD, or Ramly burgers lo....

    1. hmmm, i think when you come back later, ALL places are NICE!! haha, you just miss Malaysian food too much!! :p

      Delete
  14. I would say that most of the time it is a case of drop in quality. Perhaps due to cost cutting or the original chef left and the replacement's cooking is not as good.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah, could be the reason also, and most convincing i would say :)

      Delete
  15. There are instances when a restaurant is newly opened the owners are directly involved and the food is good. After a few months when the place is up and running, operations are left to the staff. That's when things can go wrong. There was a chicken rice shop near my office and when it was new, I love the food. A few months after the boss let go, things became "kelam kabut" and the restaurant shut down within 6 months.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. ah yes, i guess this happens to most of the chains.. one good example i can think of now is "Sushi Emperor".. i remember it started nice but then errr, nowadays i actually REFUSE to go there again!! :D

      Delete
  16. It is also possible that when we eat something too often, we get tired of it and it does not taste so good anymore. Solution is to take a break from it, then go back again. If you still like it, then it is still good. If still don't taste nice, then the quality has gone down.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah, maybe i shall give this a break and then go back again in at least 6 months time, haha!! time is the best tester huh?? :)

      Delete
  17. OK, let's take a look at the food you ate. First one is Sweet and Sour Prawns? The sauce looks thick. If it is a good sweet and sour sauce, I will scoop and put on my rice. Then top with cili padi, garlic and soya sauce. Just that only I can finish my rice.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oops...now I see the name of the dish. Prawns and Squid in Sweet and Spicy Sambal Gravy, that sounds so good!

      Delete
    2. yeah, the gravy is really very appetising.. i don't quite fancy the prawns and squid, but the gravy is really so good to go with rice :p

      Delete
  18. Ah, second one is Stir Fried Kai Lan! Is it with just garlic or with salted fish. This vege I tell you goes very well with Sweet and Sour Pork. Just thinking of this combination makes me hungry. Actually I just had lunch. Alamak!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Okie...with garlic chips, nice! nice!

      Delete
    2. hmmm, salted fish, that is a good suggestion indeed!! but i don't remember seeing that on the menu, maybe i shall suggest them next time :)

      Delete
  19. Third one is a fried fish. It looks dry lah.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah.. it doesn't usually looks that dry actually.. so that day was rather not up to the par..

    2. And looks like got a little bit of meat only...

  20. The Pork Chops looks just ok only. I love Hainanese Chicken Chop. Never tried pork chops before.

  22. The food looks yummy! But I have never been to this restaurant!

  23. Yes I have such experience before. I think it's the quality that drops not me getting used to it. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. hahaha, you talk like you are one very professional food critics huh?? well, or maybe you are one~~ :p

      Delete
  24. And I think almost all restaurants have a drop in quality as time passes. I wonder why. It's such a pity!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. errr, almost all?? i think in that case maybe it's not about quality drop but your getting-used-to-it problem, hahaha~~ :D

      Delete
  25. And that's also why I don't trust reviews on food blogs that were posted more than 6 months ago. Cos the quality may be good 6 months ago, but not now :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. of course, reviews are personal and different people have different preference and taste.. so until you try it yourself, you wouldn't know~~ :)

      Delete
  26. All your stated reasons are very valid so have to evaluate on a case by case basis. In my case, if I found a dish I like I will go back there almost every day until I jelak so not nice anymore. Then do not go for a few months then can go there to eat again.

But some places after a long time the standard will drop especially if prices everywhere goes up but they did not increase their price so have to cut on the quantity and quality.

In your photo, I like the fish dish but will ask for the soy sauce to be omitted. This Sin Kee restaurant sounds very familiar. I am not sure whether I have been there or not. Dinner definitely not but lunch maybe.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah, that is why i was also confused whether it's quality drop, or change of chef or me getting used to the food there, haha!! and actually this round was after many months since my last time eating there leh..

actually this restaurant charges on the higher end, but then still many people go and eat there, the food says it all i would think so.. maybe you should go there and try once more, to recall yourself whether you've been there before?? hehe~~ :p

      Delete
    2. But at some eateries, beginning the food taste is not so good, but after some times got improvements and become better and attract more customers!

  27. Good Afternoon Bloggers! Nice food sharing again today. See How Monkey See, Monkey Do. Here I see Thambee Eats, Thambee Do!! Wakakakaka

I see you blogged about Sin Kee before, no? This famous shop is still popualr till today and i almost love everything they cooked. Your big delicious prawns and squid in sweet spicy sambal sauce is my favourite. Tou posted it numver 1 pix, so must be top choice! Great gluttons think alike!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah, i guess i have blogged about this Sin Kee a few times, but of course the gap should be in the unit of years?? haha, i don't blog about the same topic again and again within a short period, just not my style..

oh, the gravy of that sweet spicy sambal is just appetizing, anay can have three plates of rice with just that!! :D

      Delete
    2. 3 plates of rice? Sure bo? Hehe!

But for me, I think no problem for me also but I will just eat 1 plate enough, haha! The gravy looks so good to 'lou fan'!

  28. Your stir fried kailan is so huge and crunchy looking. I cannot wait to sink my teeth onto it and yum yum. I would love them to pour oyster sauce onto it too. You have just inspired me to fry this over the weekend since my wife gone vegans again.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. ah, i can say the kailan itself was very fresh and the stem very crunchy.. just that the taste wasn't as i have expected, seems to be something missing from what i have tasted best there..

      Delete
    2. I agree with TM, the kailan looks good, the stem itself is very tempting, crunchy, slurp! When eating vegetables, I always take the stem instead of the leaves, hehe, cause I love chewing on the crunchiness. Of course leaves also I eat a lot la! But I heard people say stem got more nutrition that the leaves, is it right?

  29. This grass carp fish looks nice and sounds like a freshwater fish. Usually I get worried with the muddy smell of fresh water fishes esp in China but I believe this one must be farm reared, so, tastes good! Betul Thambee?

I never fried a big fish in my life. I only bought small cut pieces to fry them for 2 persons. Of all the meat, I like fishes the best as it is white meat and less toxins. Anay gets older and turning into health freak.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes, it's freshwater fish.. and no worries, with this cooking style, you won't be able to get the muddy smell dei.. imagine deep fried and then drizzle with soy sauce (probably mixed with some oil and sugar).. i order this fish everytime i go there~~ :p

  30. Oh now I know you saved the best food as last. I love Hainanese Chicken Chop as the Hailam chefs are the best to invent this chop. I am not sure whether you know how they came from China under the British and cooked the English food to perfections! So anything Hailam is supposed to be good. We should try to eat at the Colliseum at Jalan TAR someday ok. It was opened before WW1 and still running in its original ambiance.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yeah, this Hainanese Pork Chop from Sin Kee is nice, and i think popular too.. Anay must try that, and i like everything on the plate are homemade, nothing comes from cans or frozen packets.. the potato wedges, the baked beans and the green beans are all cooked from scratch.. and of course, the pork chop which is in the texture of minced meat patty..

  32. All these food pictures are nice and finger licking yummy looking. Yannie likes the first dish. I love everything sweet and sour. Sin Kee, I must remember this name. Who knows? I may drop by there one day.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hmm, I think all the possibilities you mentioned also are possible to happen.
Quality drops, this is sad but also unavoidable, I think it's normal also la if the quality drops from time to time, hard to maintain the same standard all the time right? But if too much then sure cannot accept la, if quality drop never mind, but must make improvement asap lo. Like if you go those restaurant packed with crowds one, say during weekend or public holiday, somehow the food quality will drop. If you go during normal days, you will realize the food taste is good, I am sure you guys experience this right?

Different person doing it, yes sure will happens. It could be new person handling it, or may be he/she is not in a good mood that day so naturally affected the outcomes.
But this thing, I must say, those working in the service lines must try not to let mood affect their work performance. Cause from the first day they work they should know they are serving people, so customer is always right, they should be professional. Of course we are just human beings la, we have feelings/mood which sometimes we cannot hide, so once a while ok la, don't do it too often, if not sure customer complains.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Taste has changed, this is normal too! It depends on our mood too, certain days we like that dish but who knows certain days we started to get bored of it? Especially happens to pregnant ladies, hehe, taste bud change drastically, cannot explain one. Before I got pregnant with Aden last time, I don't fancy spicy food, but when I got pregnant, I super love spicy food! Even until now also, sambal, curry, laksa, tomyam... Wah think liao also drooling, wakakak! xD
Or may be due to change of weather? Sometimes hot days we don't feel like eating certain thing, or will especially crave for certain thing.

And the last reason you mentioned, we ourselves getting used to it already and thus find there's nothing new. Actually quite the same like the previous reason, cause we got bored already. And we will opt for something different.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hmm what kinda of problem your case belongs to. I have no idea. Probably it's been a while since you last ate the pork chop?

Actually I am eating fried udon mee while reading this post so my appetite got even better, haha!
The first dish, prawns and squid in sweet & spicy sambal gravy, wah this is my type of dish! I said I love spicy food ma, the gravy itself already looks so appealing! If got added in petai, lagi sedap!!

Stir fried kailan with garlic chips, can say my favorite too! Cause I love vegetables and kailan is one of my favorite, 清炒 is also a good choice, and don't you think if added in siew yok, lagi best!! ^^

The third one, hmm looks so so to me, I prefer steam fish all the time.

The pork chop, was it good? Hmm I always love black pepper type only, or maryland, this one macam a lot of topping that may be cover the taste of the pork chop already. See got baked beans, onions, green peas and the think gravy. I would prefer something more plain....
