Shopping Errands While Travelling??

we talked about buying souvenirs when we go traveling in the previous post, and many agreed that it's something "maybe" since it's all about the thoughts.. so, today let's talk about what if someone knew you are going to travel, without hesitation ask for your favour to help him/her to shop for something, or even pass you a detailed shopping list?? wow, rather overwhelmed and do not know how to react, other then cold sweat?? it's not that we do not want to help, but at times there are many who are overexcited and forgotten about considerations, small items of course not an issue but bulky ones that take up space would surely be a burden!! just think, people go to enjoy their holidays and are not obliged to run shopping errands for you.. and after promising to help, one whole trip you are thinking about the shopping list, find - compare price - fork out money - buy, and when you thought it's a relief after you bought them, now worry how you are going to carry and safeguard them throughout the entire journey, not that this is something not stressful huh??

okay, and after you get home safely, you still need to arrange to meet up and pass the stuffs.. when it comes to something not cheap and also not expensive, you fall into a dilemma whether to take the money, if you do then you may not know if that was expected to be some kind of souvenirs for them?? and you do not know if what your bought is really what he/she asked for?? in short, it gets troublesome I'll say.. hence if not really necessary, I will not want to trouble others (unless I was asked what I want), similarly I also do not hope to get too much of trouble, haha!! closed ones still alright, but not closed ones, better don't lah.. it's easy to pay off money you owed others, but the favor you asked for will remain a favor you owe, agree?? :p

  1. Hahaha, I'm so into this, because I always ask people around me help me to buy stuffs, but of course need to see who is that first la, cannot simply ask person to buy one, if not will give any troublesome to them also we ourselves don't know!!

So usually if they really ask what I want, I always give a very easy simple souvenir one, like keychain (of course use to collect it not for using) easy simple and light to carry but I also got an small excuse for it, I want something metal and made by anything else I don't want something plastic (very demand person, I know...but don't worry I only saying this request to those I'm very close only)

There're more to go to comment, but not now..back later!!! Chao!! =]

Yay, happens to me too! But like you, it depends who is that person la, if close one then I won't hesitate, for those not so close one, have to think twice, hehe!

    2. Good afternoon Sheta,

You are the most early here. Nice! I also think metal key chain is much better than plastic ones.

    3. yeah, don't feel good to trouble others even if really closed friends also.. unless really wanted the thing badly, then will ask if they are convenient to help.. or if they ask what i want, i will also be considerate so that it won't be causing trouble to them..

    4. I don't feel good also, but my friends she always self offer me, so I just tell lo!! Glad they always don't need me to ask but they'll offer me what I want!! Because so, I also not feel any paiseh la, because many many years friends already, if I said nothing then they even headache or what should get for me, haha!! =]

    2. I agree with SK. I will only ask friends who are closer to me. Usually I will ask them to buy handbags if they are going to Europe or US. Handbag is quite big actually(食位). So, I will only ask ladies to help. Sometimes if the friend said not convenient, I will say it is ok, never mind. Luckily I have a good friend who travel to US quite often. This friend of me helped me to buy many Coach bags and the most recent Michael Kors for me. I am really grateful to her help. Like SK said is right, 人情債係欠一世

  3. Good morning bloggers.

When I see the word souvenirs, I think about my sister already.. She collects magnets from all around the world.. So she will ask whoever that goes on vacation to get her a fridge magnet.. I think by now, she has the entire collection from all over the world.. She has a few air-stewardess friends too, so that makes it easier..

    2. Ok, if that person just ask me to get her a fridge magnet, I’d say yes without hesitating, coz I will also go get the same for my sister, haha..

But if that person hand me a long check-list and ask me to go get it, errr, I think I will stare at him/her with my jaw opened, hehehehe.. Guess he/she will get that hint kua..

Unless that person is very close to us, I don’t think he/she will hand me a loooong list of stuffs kua.. One or two stuff like T-shirt or fridge magnet, I’m alright I guess..

    3. Like you, I don’t really like when people tumpang me to buy things too.. Coz they will compare and “ah chi ah jor” after that.. And say things like “Eh, I saw online the price is not that expensive ger wor.. I saw in the forum ahh, the price is RMXX only wor”, those kinda remarks..

I don’t like “poh ma” people.. Unless they say “Ok, you buy that piece of magnet for me, I pay you back, I don’t care so much on the price, as long as it doesn’t exceed RMXX”.. Like that ok lor..

      Delete
    4. Everything you said today makes sense.. It happens to all of us I guess..

I will try to avoid buying things for people (on their check list), but I will buy for them as souvenirs based on my goodwill.. Like keychains or magnets, or chocolates..

Don’t “achi achor” or “yim3 yim4” enuff lor..

    6. Ok, let me see what else when I can write.. Human hor, is like that one.. If you don’t say anything, I will buy for you, as souvenirs, no need ask for your money (of coz), coz it’s from me, I buy for you as souvenirs..

But once you open mouth ask me buy things ahh, I feel obligated..

    7. If tak jumpa or really no time to go buy, can say sorry, no buy.. Then no need to worry about money liao, keke (if the stuff is expensive la)..

If buy liao, if the other party “sing mook” give back money, then ok.. Phew..

      Delete
    8. If the other party no ask how much, and “char char dai dai” no give back money, and if the stuff is expensive, hmm, in a dilemma too.. Susah susah…

Buy magnets or chocolates ok lagi.. Imagine people tumpang us to buy branded bags or perfume.. Wah takut..

If buy wrong design or wrong type, dunno how.. Who wana bear the expensive cost? And if buy back, the the fella say “Eh, this looks like AA-for”, wah, can die..

    9. Good afternoon Princess Ribbon,

You must be a kind person if people not closed to you ask you to buy things for them. If a person does not look friendly, people usually will be scared to ask them to buy things.

Expensive stuffs like branded bags, I think must pay half first before you buy for them because not fair to ask you to pay upfront when it is their bags unless very closed to you like your sister.

      Delete
    10. i so gotta agree with you!! that's the problem lor, actually the most scary part is not the hunting or buying or carrying, but would be when they tell you that is not what they want or the price not right etc etc.. wah, that one sure like you are falling from the top floor to the ground floor like that lor..

that's why ah, if people ask to help buy things, better ask them to give the price range and also to give a few photos of the thing they want.. now got Whatsapp better, if can hook online then can straight away clarify and confirm lor..

having that said, if i ask people to help, i will give as many details as possible.. and if so unlucky if they bought something not i want, okay lah, just pay and take and keep quiet and still thank them lor..

      Delete
    11. betul tu SK. But even with price range and photos still have room for error leh. Like if buy Chinese Tea from China...even with description and price range...still how to know genuine or not? There is one famous tea in China call "Malau Mit"(my colleague said la) So if buy that one..come back discover it's fake how?

Yes, that is the way it should be....ask peple help buy but if buy wrong ...just keep quiet ..pay up to avoid lost of friendship. Coz some will go on harping about the wrong item bought till the end of the world...that is what i dont like

  5. Ah...I like this topic! I for one would not ever want to trouble people to buy stuff for me when they travel. I mean when someone goes overseas for a holiday or whatever reason, they need to focus on their trip and their itinerary when they are there. Imagine if they have to take the trouble to go search for your things are carry it around with them. No, no, not good at all.

Hmmm...actually in Malaysia we also have most of everything here already. only is the price some are higher . Actually no need to buy from overseas unless we sendiri go and buy instead of tumpang here and there

  6. Unless... as you said it is something small and better yet, if that thing is available at a place that you are specifically going to. Or if that person says "If you happen to come across xxx, can you buy for me? Only if you see it, otherwise, it is OK." And if it is a small thing, easy to carry (like special chocolate that can't get in Malaysia) and if I am not made to feel pressured to get it, then I may oblige.

    1. Yeah, happened to me.

I've already spent time looking for the items and they still pull face because it wasn't what they had in mind. Terrible la...

Got one person, want to buy those algae pill or something & ask me to check the pharmacies and I told her that that will be very inconvenient... she sulked and told me, OK la... ask her stewardess friend to buy. WTF? I go there once a year only, she thinks I wanna waste time go pharmacy cari her ubat??? Especially when she has friends who go there often???? Hmph

So troublesome like that, if my mom ask only la I go buy. Friends... not close some more... forget it.

I also have phobia about FB and those urchins would wriggle in when I am on vacation. The best is when they saw my photos and start to PM me to buy nonsense. I put them inside my CB-Friend list. Wakakakaka

    6. some people are surely very inconsiderate and taking things for granted.. well, at least we can see the true face and true colors of such kind of people when we politely rejected and explained our difficulties right?? muka tembok ask and *hint hint* to buy things, if cannot help then go *sulk sulk* at one corner, this type of people, errr, sorry lah i have to say~~

      Delete
    7. PH, sure there're people like this. But luckily I din't come across such people, in my gang, hoho.
But those people are really 'mmm yeng koi' lo! You ask people buy things then please accept whatever they bought for you, whether you like it or not, cause people take the trouble to search and buy the item for you! At least show appreciation la! Then if you really don't like the item, you can try sell it off, or give to someone else.
But please don't say you don't want la! People like this, sure I blacklist.

But, if I were the one helping people to buy things oversea, I will tell them beforehand that if I cannot find the right item they want , I'll sure give up totally, unless they say they don't mind other color, or given me a budget.

      Delete
    8. yes...betul betul..like Lina said ..been there done that...kena before. susah susah hunt for the item...then say not nice ah...not right colour ah..why you dont buy this this that that color...why so expensive(though within price range)...

  9. I get that every time I go to the US. I usually don't run errands for people anymore. I will send my hotel address to them, ask them to buy their stuff online and have it shipped to me. It works because I usually stay for 3 weeks or more. And I will personally vet their intended purchases and agree to it before they can buy. And 1st come 1st serve, if I said my luggage is full, it means they are full and no further requests will be entertained :P

If they asked me to get them fridge magnets, I would be happy to buy it for them as I would normally buy them for myself.

The worst cases were asking me to buy them few big bottles of honey!!! WTH!! Each bottle was near RM100. Walau eh! Heh Heh... I didn't buy and the blame was swept under carpets trick.

Another case as asking me to buy some pickled stuffs from China! She didn't know that I was there until she saw FB postings and seized the opportunity to PM messages. After buying, I think no money was collected. Heh Heh...

  14. Good evening everyone,

Good to be in this comment section ala chatroom today. This is a good topic because we are bound to face this when we announced that we are going on a vacation overseas.

If going to France, there will be requests to buy LV bags. If going to USA, will be going to outlets to buy branded goods at warehouse prices also.

I have a friend who loves to buy things for other people when she is on vacation overseas. She will treat it like some sort of a quest like in a video or console game where the king asks the knight to go on a quest to get something from the forest. To her, it is the satisfaction of completing the quest (aka successful in buying the requested thing).

The thing about her is she is very thorough. You ask her to buy something you better be prepared to answer her questionaire of the least 5 pages - detailed description of the item to be bought, price range, expiry date if applicable, where to get, how to get there, how to pack the thing - can throw away the packaging if the packaging is bulky and etc. In the end everyone is so scared of answering those questionaires that they do not want to ask her to buy anything anymore so she was so disappointed - no more quests, so no satisfaction.

What a funny friend, don't you think?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Wow! I like this funny and brilliant friend of yours. Now she gives me the idea to give out questionaires to irritate and scare my friends in future. I will ask them to pay me upfront plus all the possible taxes and my time too. My wife was always caught in this dilemma and got stressed in overseas. She had to snap photos and watsap her friend to choose which one!

      Delete
    2. oh, this is not funny at all, but i find it very SMART!! i would like to do this like your friend did.. i shall start to prepare a questionnaire and get whoever asking me to buy things to fill in the form with all details before doing so.. muahahaha!! actually this one helps both parties, because when there are more details and specification given, chances is that we will not be getting the wrong thing!! and photos must not be excluded, indeed, snap from all 6 directions would be good!! hehehehe, i really like this idea~~

    3. yup smart fruiend indeed. hahaha....SK now can make those questionaire and your script...click click..who wanna ask buy...must answer all the question plus pay deposit

  15. Oh, I have something to share on this too...
I was in US for three weeks few years ago... while I was there, a blogger (never meet her before but know her thru blogging) left a msg at my FB... asking me to do her a favour.. she asked me to bring back a few Coach bags for her and she asked for my address in US so that her friend can sent the bags to my address. I was torn in decision.. firstly, I cannot just reveal my sis address to a stranger, secondly, we were traveling a lot and we were not at home to receive the bags... thirdly, my luggage was also very full...
So I told her my dilemma.... then since that day, she didn't want to "fren" me already... sigh.. I felt so bad... I lost a blogger friend because of this....
If she is reading this comment, I hope she will understand... its not that I didn't want to bring back her bags, I really couldn't do it cos it is beyond my discretion...

Later hilang or scratch or something leh....some more that is not your address leh....moreover your location and that blogger friend is not the next taman only. After you bring back, how are you going to delivery to that friend?

    3. Coach bags memang is something must-buy from US huh? I also get a list of Coach bags to buy when I travelled to US 2 years ago, actually I din't announce to many friends, just 1 or 2 close ones, but mana tau they go and ask the rest want Coach bags or not? Then slowly the requests increased already, haih, what to do? I cannot blame anyone, cause I din't tell them to keep it as secret, so cannot blame them from telling the rest.

So that's how I got a list of Coach bags, end up I managed to buy for all of them but not all get exactly what they want, cause it's impossible to get the actual items everybody wants ma, I just buy according to budget, color and design wise, my own preference.
Luckily in the end, all also took the bags and i don't have to 'telan' those bags, I actually bought a few extras and managed to sell them off also. Phew!
But that was it la, no more next time even if I go to US again, cause packing them inside my luggage is one tough job! Have to squeeze them and separate them into 2 places, luckily no overweight, haha!

  16. well, I don't do that. I shop as I wish and I don't shop for other people. It's better to stay this way. No obligation.

    1. Yes, I also like to shop as I wish... don't like to take orders.. if take, then the whole trip will be thinking of the things I wanna get for them and it is no more relaxing anymore.. unless no obligations.. like if I see, I buy... no see, no buy.... Buy at our own pace and time...

    2. haha, but i think Wenn also shops a lot for her family members.. everytime she comes back from somewhere, every one in her family sure gets lots of stuffs from her~~ :)

  17. That's a typical dilemma when travelling and those thick skin fellas will never failed to try their luck. Just open the mouth and see if they can kena what they want and if they got it, it's like striking jackpot and it's a bonus if the buyer don't even want to take the money and give it as a souvenir.

    1. errr, some don't even think like that, but they are just taking things from granted and expect that you MUST get what they want.. these are really lousy people lah..

  18. If you ask me, I will gently tell them I will try to get it for them but no guarantee. Just tell them just in case this or that happened and didn't manage to get what they want. Of course, it's tough if its someone close like relatives or in laws. But then, have to managed their expectations.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes, have to set the expectation right.. we are not promising and not going to guarantee anything.. not to get anything is merely because we are not obliged to, if can get means we are doing a favor and for goodwill lor..

      Delete
    2. Ya I agree, have to set expectation, if really can find then help them buy la, sure they happy, seeing them happy we also happy la, but like you said, must mention first, no guarantee one, will try our best only.

  19. However, if that barang-barang is not big and not expensive and can be get easily, then ok la... just buy for them lor ..as a goodwill. Of course , if it's big and heavy then really sorry la. In fact, if the person knew that it's a hassle to carry it back and still asked for it, then he or she deserved for not getting it. So, it's really depends on what they wanted.

    1. of course small things and easy to carry would be better, but then also need to see if you are conveniently getting those or not.. tak kan you purposely take 1 hour train to go to that place, to buy that thing, and then take another 1 hour train to go back to where you are right??

  27. Actually your this topic reminds me one incident happened to me in the beginning of this year, my brother and his family went to Taiwan, then I accidentally said the word out to ask my brother to help me buy stuffs (actually are not supposed to, because my brother is having trouble with his (ex)wife) but then what to do, the words already out, my brother kept on telling me to give the info of the things that I want to buy, want to reject also cannot...

Then things happened, the first day of their trip in Taiwan my brother what's app he can't find the product then reply don't need to get anymore if you can't find, then next day he message me again saying he has looked through many store still won't be able to find...(something like that, but can feel the anger) Noticed he must be has some troubles with his (ex)wife...

Don't need ask, everything explains when they got back, usually my brother will take his kids and ex(wife) out every weekend, but after he had got back, we don't see he go find his kids anymore for two months...

I seriously felt so guilty for it, I should expected that, but just never thought of it can be that serious!! =[

    1. You mean because of helping you to search for that item, your brother argue with his ex-wife?
Hmm I understand your feeling, somehow feel guilty, but then what to do, already happened. Try to think positive, may be if you din't ask for his helps to buy things, they might have argued due to other reasons too?
Brother is brother, sure he will help you buy no matter what, that's his love for his sister, you don't have to feel guilty la!

    2. Actually you don't understand thing from complicated family and from lots of divorce cases family!! Something for other is nothing, but my family is not!! Always got weird weird thing have to take care of!! Even me myself also don't understand how's the flow and the situation should go, so nothing to say about others la!!! Just have to be smart and do I'm suppose to do!! =]

    3. Ya 家家有本难念的经,I am sorry if I say anything offensive to you. I don't mean to critic about your family or anything, I was just trying to 安慰 you and make you feel slightly ok.

Yes, just do whatever we are suppose to do.

  28. I bet this happened to almost everyone la! Especially those who goes travel very frequently.
Not to brag but in my gang, hubby and I go travel the most so naturally we get 'orders' from friends even family. To me, family wise, no need them to pesan la I'll surely buy for them, my parents and brother, and must not forget my in laws since my father in law sponsor us the trip and pocket money, hehe! But for him kinda hard to buy things for him, so usually we just settle with food, something the whole family can enjoy.
Then for my parents, they always pesan me no need to buy anything for them, my brother too. But end up, I will get something for them also la, even something small is good enough, as a 纪念 ma!
And for these people, I won't take money from them la! =)

Then for friends, I will buy souvenirs for close ones, erm 2-3 la. And since I mentioned souvenir, of course I won't collect money from them lo! I guess we sort of 心灵相通 also, they will buy me things when they go oversea too! Even if not for me, for Aden also =)

But for those who ask me to help them buy things, I won't hesitate to collect money from them lo! Cause it's something they ask me to buy ma, so must be seng mok to pay la! I don't care one, I will become muka tebal to ask for money one, but thank God la so far my friends all seng mok, they will automatically ask me how much after convert, they understand it's something they ask me to buy so they have to pay.
But to make things not so bad, I actually tell them a few things beforehand, like if that model/color they want is not available, I'll choose based on my preferences, and they must be ok with it, cause they need to understand la since I go travel is to relax one ma, not taking the troubles to help them search for things everywhere. So whatever I see first I'll buy already, I won't trouble myself to go and search for the perfect one.
Sometimes they give me budget also la, good also cause I no need to 'fan', once the item out of the budget then I terus give up.
Anyway, this incident doesn't happen much on me la, except when I go Paris and US. Paris famous for branded bags so friends took the opportunity to buy, so I helped whenever possible. Got a friend very understanding, she banked in money to me first, and said will pay whatever left out.
Then during the trip to US, what else, Coach bags la! Sister in law and friends also ask me to buy, especially the wrislets, given me budget/color. I got took a photo of those bags I managed to buy, like a sale, haha! But none are for me that time, all for other people, cause I personally don't really like Coach, erm actually I already got one wrislet la so I thought I don't need already. But those Coach bags sold there (in the outlet) are really cheap and worth buying la, of course not new model la, but still looks nice, cheaper than those sold here about 1 to 2 times.

Carrying them back is an issue of course, so if I knew I was going to buy things, I try my best to travel light, or bring a bigger luggage. Lucky so far, I din't break any record xD

    ReplyDelete
  29. Sometimes to avoid this is very easy!! Don't tell anyone you go travel!!! Hahaha!!! Like my sisters did!! This's part of the reason why they don't like your travel photos post on FB!! Like that if you don't say, I don't say, no one knows mah!!! Easy thing settle!!

But if if really got people ask, seriously I won't trouble myself purposely go find things they want, if got the got, if don't have, sorry I can't help!! I did try my best to look for it, I've alredy done my job, if really don't have the "fate" to meet the present or souvenir then I can't do anything!

At least when the person who request ask about it, I can say I looked for it but can't find it! Not like we don't want, right? So we already did what we can did, nobody faults!! If the person really because of this got mad at you, seriously this kind of friends want or don't also nothing less!!

We go travel is relax ourselves and be happy, go until so stress and troublesome, go for what ho?!! Remember first thing to be concern is your own happiness then only can bring happiness to others mah!!

If the person who request you to buy stuffs knew you have been through so many troubles, he/she ownselve also felt guilty or embarrassed (those thick face one doesn't count) and maybe just the only time like this, then also know they won't ask for the second time!! =]

    1. Ahaha, true! Just keep quiet and don't tell anyone yet! Like that can avoid from being bombarded with requests already, but some people will still sms/whatsapp to ask one, I mean those who really want to buy that thing la! So depends lo, if close one then I will try to help but I will mention beforehand, no guarantee one ar! Some friends also very 'sek do' la, they will say '看到才买,不用特地去找'. I will say that too to my friends. Sometimes this thing have to see fate la, no forcing one, if can find then consider lucky lo! If not, then no choice la!

Yaya, those feel paiseh/guilty one won't ask again next time, or he/she will automatically pay you extra and ask you keep the change, as a bonus la! ;)

      Delete
    2. Is a very conflict here, if you really don't tell, go secretly, how do there know leh?? Don't polar anything in Facebook or instagrsm, then am an avoid lo!! See you want or not only!! Because my sisters always like that, really scared to tell anyone or letting others know!!!

Got such good one argh? Ask you to keep the change, so far I know is they will calculate the exact same amount with the currency exchange rate to pay back the money, nothing more or nothing less!!!

      Delete
    3. Haha yea, it's very 矛盾 also la! But I think it also depends on where you go, if go those ulu ulu place then sure no people asking for helps to buy things, like me going to Norway last year, nothing popular there so no 'order' at all, haha! If go Korea ar, Paris ar then sure people will ask to buy things lo!

Yep, I encountered such cases when I helped a friend buy LV bag, she is quite generous la, she gave me about RM 20 as extra, hehe!

  30. Good morning SK .

Hmmm this topic manyak hangat oh. Have a lot to debate.

Many points I agree with you .

If small items and a bit only then can help find and carry la but if big items or a lot of item...sorry la..i won't bother. call me "jual ikan" or what la but then it's my vacation leh. if wanna borong a lot then the peroson can sendiri go and borong . bear in mind, myslef also need to buy things leh

One more thing that I am not keen is that people tumpang to buy expensive things. Like you said la...buy but then how to know whether it is the correct item that the person want? ya now have whatapps , Viber facebook and email...ya canm send the photo for preview but then still...there will be magin or error, right? How la...if buy already..the person say wrong....how?

We "telan" that item or die die ask the person to pay for it? Then it wil affect friendship pulak.

    1. another thing is like you have said....after buy have to headache arrange time and place to meet pulak

ya ya some may say okay mah...small matter only but then still ah....troublesome leh. if the thing not perishable or not urgent can keep till next time meet la. but if perishable then susah sikit leh

      Delete
    2. totally agree with you...hutang people "yan Cheng"(favor) not nice feeling coz later if other people ask you help buy bulky item or expensive ones during vacation then you dont help ...become one big issue pulak.

      Delete
    3. If for me, they ask my help to buy things, they must have the initiative to come collect the items themselves! Don't expect me to go and bring for them! Like that too much liao la!
Unless if so ngam I got go out then may be can arrange pick up at somewhere convenient la! And if you ask people buy things, you seng mok abit, pay a bit extra, macam tips la! No need people say, sendiri seng mok.
For me I usually do that, as a token of appreciation.
