SOUVENIRS: Yes or No, Must or Maybe?
Hokkaido Japan
以上圖集為最近日本之旅第三日及第四日嘅照片所組成..
the collage above is formed by photos taken during the 2nd and 3rd days of my recent japan trip..
i believe we all love travel, of course for vacation and not business, i guess not much would love the latter huh?? and when we talk about travel, we naturally link to buying souvenirs huh?? do you think it's a must to get souvenirs when you go travel?? will you want to be a santa claus who will distribute souvenirs to every one?? me, definitely not a "souvenirs person", or shall i say it depends.. it's impossible to please everyone but if i see something nice, i will consider to get a few for myself and people around who are close to me.. i always think souvenirs are just nice-thoughts but something compulsory, so instead of getting something not quite practical then better not get anything at all.. hence i don't go ask others for souvenirs, as i understand and don't want to put others in an awkward position.. similarly, i also don't quite enjoy others who "muka tembok" asking me for souvenirs, have means have and none means none lah.. in short, souvenirs is what others give you, not what you ask for, haha!! :D
BUT!!! i have actually bought some souvenirs from Hokkaido for my readers.. over the past month i have published a total of 8 (patience challenging) posts about the trip, and now i would like to give the souvenirs to the top 5 readers (based on those 8 posts), as a little token of appreciation to their amazing support!!

    1. If you have your travelogue earlier before my job start I can la...but now, cannot, only can support a few only!! I'm not working for dad, no more free time as last time, working for dad or own company one sure lots of time one, coz no one will scold mah, the works load also can control by own, but now everyday also got challenge (hair also turned white already) no more lepak lepak feeling to do anything liao!!

And also postcard, but if not flying alone argh, very hard to find postcard and post postcard one...I remember my HK one I've sent out 20 of them, and I've to sit in the airport's floor (coz can't find a seat) to finish them, it took me like more than an hour to finish lo!! xp

Okay chiao...need to back to my work...byebye. happy Friday and Happy Weekend!!! =D

    4. I agree with Small Kucing. Sheta is such a nice girl. I wasn't expecting anything from her and she sent me a box of souvenirs from Korea until I am so very paiseh. Thank you Sheta. All the best in your dream job.

Have a good and relaxing weekend!

    5. Hi 小影!Glad to see you here again, FC some more!
Eh never mind la, at least you came and commented, numbers of comments doesn't matter.
Anyway, hope to see you more often here in the future! Miss sharing with you =)

Oh ya, can tell you are a souvenir person, see what you given us from Korea, very 有心, and total got 10 some more! Very generous too!
Postcards, I just buy and bring home, I don't post during my trip also.. Hehe, very hard to find post office, and don't know how to post also. I just choose a nice and meaningful one, and bring home to keep, a memory for me.

    6. Doesn't matter FC or not la!! Got then got lo... Pressure to hard argh!! Later didn't get I'll felt very tension and stress again!!! =]

It depends, some times I also hard to find a post office like that time I went to Korea, those are weekends then public holiday for them so no choice la!!! But I also told myself don't put too harsh, later it's obviously is a happy thing then end up become a stressful thing!! =]

  2. For me buying souvenirs are not necessary when travelling abroad. But it has become common practice for people to buy something to show that they have been somewhere. And somehow, people tend to expect you to give them souvenirs if they know that you went abroad for holiday.

    1. Phong - just post pictures on Facebook and people know you are on vacation. Lol

      Delete
    2. true...some will expect "hand letters" ..

small items can la...like keychain and fridge magnet. Big item how to carry. end up will have stressful vacation

now must do the less stressful thing...copy anay. buy postcard and post to the people .

      Delete
    3. Actually what do people do with so many keychains and fridge magnets? Pass them onto their children and grandchildren as heirlooms? If valuable, ok, but mostly I don't think can grow into antiques and be valuable.

      Delete
    4. Buy keychain also... people either just put aside or hang somewhere.

Seldom see people use. Well, that's what my colleagues and me do lah.

Truthfully, chocolates are the best! HAhaha

      Delete
    5. I agree with Lina. Chocolates anytime!

      Delete
    6. Ya, small items are ok, but ho key chains.... Sorry la but just wanna be honest, I personally think key chains are kinda 'useless'... I don't have so many keys to hang also, so sure cannot use all the key chains also.. End up, I just collect them into a bag and keep in the cupboard... I really don't know what to do with them. Throw? Feel not good. Give to other people? Who should I give to? =_=

So now when I go oversea, I seldom buy key chains as souvenirs, though keychains are so common and can be found almost anywhere. Cause I expect my friends think like I do, I would rather buy food like chocolates/biscuits, or fridge magnets kinda thing. Or if those friends got kids one, I'll buy for their kids instead (got buy is better than nothing la xD), kids stuff are easier to buy.
With all these, at least it's more 'useful' than key chains.

      Delete
    7. keychains i hang on my bags as decorative items.

      Delete
    8. But how about every time you received one, you also hang it there argh? Then it might become very heavy lo?? O.o!!

  4. You mean there are people who actually ask for souvenirs? Alamak, that's not how it works right? But it is really hard you know, if you buy souvenirs to give some people and then when the others hear about it they will feel left out.Or even hurt or offended. But for me, I don't expect souvenirs from any family members or friends when they go abroad. If they give, it is nice, if they don't, it is fine. I am quite indifferent towards souvenirs.

    1. Hahaha

      Shocking, right?

But I've seen a few like that. Even trawling between blogs. Muahaha

      Delete
    2. I have encountered many times la people asking for souvenirs....like my sis...she will ask "wei...where is my hand letters". But I know she is joking la coz when she travel I also jokingly ask her "wei...where is my hand letter ah?"We dont really expect to bring anything la. Maybe if she saw something that ngum me, she will buy and give me lo. Same over here. If tarak see ngum, means tarak buy la

      Delete
    3. Some people expect you to be obligated to give wor... especially if they already given us something earlier.

I will return a favour but I don't like to be co-erced into doing it.

      Delete
    4. But in most culture, when people give we must return in kind so it kinds of defeats the purpose of giving when you are expecting people to give you back something, right? When I give, I don't expect something in return.

Actually maybe sometimes we are the ones who perasan, people asking for souvenirs are only joking with us only and not really expecting something actually.

      Delete
  5. Some souvenirs are not worth buying. I mean, some of them are not even made in that particular country. What I would look for is a souvenir that is unique to that place that I visit. For example if you go to Belgium, you would want to buy the chocolates. Or if you are in Austria, you want to buy the Austrian crystals. Of course, must be within budget lah.

    1. betul betu betul ...pick up a pot then see the bottom written "made in CXXXX". Alamak.....

Like if go Vietnam, buy pearls , right?

when i was younger...I felt "complusory" to buy for people but now....see the barang like you said la. not even made of that country and not worth the price

      Delete
    2. Very true. When I see "Made in China" and I am not in China at that time, I will not buy. Quite true what Small Kucing says, when younger, then to feel pressure to conform to what we think society expects us to do but when older and wiser already, this sap sap sui things do not effect us much.

      Delete
    3. That's true, applies to most people I guess. Must be special and unique enough then only consider to buy. Like go US, buy Coach bag, go Paris, buy LV, and go Korea, buy beauty products and bla bla bla :p

      Delete
  6. I will only buy souvenirs for immediate family and also for myself as a keepsake to remind me of the time and place I spent abroad. Too many souvenirs on the shelf will collect dust hah..hah...

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree with the collecting dusts part so now I have a policy of not receiving anything from anyone. Just treat me to food if you want to give me anything. Hahahahaha, I am such a glutton! :D

  8. It's the thought that counts.

Though of course it's nice to receive gifts, we shouldn't pressure people into giving them to us or sulk when we don't get one.

Have to think about the gift giver also.

    3. buy for one...but not buy for another. then merajuk pulak. if merajuk still can mend. If take offense and gaduh....haiz...susah....

      Delete
    4. Ya lah. Merajuk and take offence memang a problem. That's why I only buy for my parents, my brothers, niece and nephew. Even then I take the easy way out - chocolates and speciality nuts! Or anything else that can eat. No point buying those things that collect dust on the shelf because after a while it becomes clutter.

      Delete
    5. pandai Phong Hong. As grow older, will be wiser. Buy food stuffs and stuff that can be use.

    5. I received the gift then only I came to this post, so you can guess the gift is actually a surprise for me! =)
This Pos Laju ho, actually delivery service is ok, but what I cannot tahan is the service at the counter! I don't know about other states la but at Taiping is like that, worse we got only ONE pos laju office here so no choice have to go also la.

    3. I know, in this aspect I am well and truly a moron and a heartless bastard, but I can't seem to be able to help it >.< . You know la, I rent room only, my furniture is a foldable table, a chair, a bed and a wardrobe.
When I get things like keychains or postcards, I will place them in a container. Every few months when I do a clearing out of rubbish, I would notice the container and wonder who gave me those souvenirs, cannot recall. After a few years, I figured nobody would remember it, so they go to the bin.
Nowadays my friends are smarter, their souvenirs are all edible stuff. When they come back from vacation, we would have a dinner gathering and consume all the souvenirs immediately :D

      Delete
    4. I see your point RG. That's why I prefer to buy edibles. Or else whoever it is ends up with so many key chains/figurines and whatnots and as you said, they end up becoming rubbish. So giving them away is not such a bad idea instead of throwing away.

      Delete
    5. RealGunners is so honest. Very good. Now we know who to feed and not give any souvenirs. Hahaha!

      Delete
    6. You are so honest RG

    7. Edibles also have to have heart to choose coz some things when go through pos will melt or break .

wah you renting a room then susah lor to keep so many things.

Must kumpul mooncakes boxes to keep keychains and postcards then

  11. Very nice montage. I'd surely buy this if it's a postcard. :D

Congrats to the deserving winners! Great job!

  14. Yeah , you are right. No point forcing yourself to buy souvenirs for everyone ,starting from your relatives to your neighbours. After all , it's your own vacation , so just have fun. However, it's ok to get something for those you are very close to where I am sure you are willing to shop for something nice for these people.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sometimes I do dislikes some folks who bought you something and they expected you to get them something back when it's your turn to go for trips. If like that , it really makes the trip very stressful and disruptive. It's especially so when they bought you something expensive and you needed to match back the price.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For this type of people , easy only. No need to buy. So next round they will "blacklist" you and no need to stress to purposely go find and buy. Vacation supposed to be relaxing. not stressful

    3. Wow, Sk's post is really a therapy post. It is like being in a therapist room where all sorts of honest deep down feelings come out. Things that you will never say to whoever who gives you gifts will come out here, hehehe.

    4. I agree zmun2 that his post releases all kinds of vibes and laughters too. Well sometimes we also saw worms wriggling out of their mouths and brains too. We have to phiak them and they went into the emo horizons to sulk till eternity!

    6. Can I comment as like a 过来人 here??!!! Maybe you guess don't understand how all these people thoughts, just thinking are asking for granted and ask for return!!! Being a "been through situation people" guess I comment more about it!!

Last time at my very very young age as in very childish childish minded always have the envy feeling that why this and that person always got souvenir and I don't have, actually the souvenir also not like something expensive la!! But just that seeing people got and I don't have so what to do is I started buying for others expect some return, so dreming like next time people received souvenirs then I also all mah, everyone also got one then everyone happy ending right (like I said it was a very childish mindset) The truth is the world don't really go exactly you expected so in the end when it doesn't look like what expected of course felt so sad and start blaming myself but as time flies started to learn giving is not about asking for return, the fun part in between is time when you're preparing for presents or souvenirs and you'll start thinking how's the receiver felt and the surprise expression on their face!! Nothing much to ask for return, see their happy face and even a single thank you, it worth back everything in between!!!

What I want to say is not really want the small small souviners or present for return, as in maybe they've their reason or somewhat they asking for it, serious, the small small souvenir really mean nothing much, but just the heart of giving like "eh, this person did reminds me while traveling!" This so sweet, right???

But I dont think i will put a list and buy things for one by one for the people in the list . Traveling and vacation supposed to be relaxing. So I dont think it is compulsory to go hunting for gifts

I usually buy for family and close friends only so no need a list also can remember la!
Unless if people tumpang me to buy things (which they will pay la eventually) then I'll write a list and try my best to buy for them la. This one they pay one not souvenir so ok la for me, LOL!
But ho do you guys find it a bit troublesome when helping people to buy things oversea? Like, branded bags. When I went US, lots of friends tumpang me to buy Coach, some give models some give budgets, actually very hard also la, some cannot find the models also... So I just buy according to my preference, like favorite color and design, no matter what they have to take it, I already told them upfront, luckily they understand..

  21. aha... I like today's topic.. Souvenirs While Traveling!
Many years ago, whenever I went, the first thing I think of is shopping.. shopping means buying stuff... buying stuff means buying for ownself, families, (parents/kids/siblings/nephews/nieces) and most time, I ended up spending and bringing back a lot of "unnecessary stuff" home... things that I didn't end up using but keeping dust instead, things for my kids, till today, some are still lying there in the cupboard... so on and so forth...

Ok cut story short.. nowadays whenever I travel, I have minimized my souvenirs list.. no more buying anything interesting in sight... now I am more on eating mode... clothing, I don't buy anymore cos my cupboard is going to "burst" soon... So in fact nothing much to buy.. and the main reason is MY KIDS HAVE TAKEN OVER THE TASK! They are the ones buying souvenirs for their friends.. lots of them.. and any remaining souvenirs left over, the mother will take.... hahahaa...(ooppppsss...bocor rahsia liow!)

    1. Good sharing, claire, holidays are meant to be relaxing and enjoying, Why stress ourselves to think of buying this and that, might as well focusing on our own happiness like food ad sight seeing. If happen to see something worth buying, only buy, don't purposely go and hunt for souvenir.

      Delete
    2. Yes, you are right Yannie... traveling is supposed to be relaxing and not stressing over what to buy for others... I remember one colleague of mine, we traveled together and each night, she woudl take out her paper and write something.. I asked her what she was doing.. and she replied.. "striking off names for those I have bought souvenirs for" ... oh Gosh.. like that also can? hahahaha.. Good to be her friend though.. she will buy for everyone in the office!! hahahaa...

I don't even buy for my own personal friends or relatives as I think bloggers appreciate them better. They deserve my little gifts for entertaining me with their blogs. I think my personal friends and relatives are the ones who stressed me more. They deserve to get a rotan from me. Muahahaha

    6. Aiyor TM, if your personal friends and relatives read this, you will kena rotan from them. Hehehe! Have a good weekend!

    7. Claire, I got similar experience too!
When I first started going oversea, I have the mindset that 'since I am here, just buy la, don't bother, cause don't know when will come back to this place again'. So with this evil mindset, I also end up buying many unnecessary things... I remember buying a pouch bag from Adidas when I went Spain, and that pouch left untouched in my 'store room' even until now, haha! Really unnecessary la!

So now, learn already, only buy useful and necessary things, and try to control my thinking and don't let the evil mindset control me, hehehe! :p

      Delete
    8. now we old already, Claire. So everything also like mellow already. No more umph to buy stuffs

Hmm.... Anay's have a funny idea on appreciating bloggers that entertain him. Betul jugak what Anay say. Bloggers also like a nice surprise. Not the blogger is greedy but kinda nice gesture having somebody giving stuffs .

    1. Claire is so honest to admit being "slightly unhappy". I don't even buy souvenirs for myself when I go travelling so I never expect any from others, very happy with no souvenirs.

    2. Mun, true, true..... if you don't give then you won't expect.... but if you start to give, then you might want to expect... . when you give, some may be left out and when they know about it, that is when the problem starts to seep in... so ... moral of the story... give and receive with a cheerful heart.. give and not receiving must also TRY to be cheerful... hahahahaa...

    6. Princess Ribbon argh, your keychains one reminds me that I always buy keychains for my bff one, until that's one day she told don't buy keychain for her anymore, coz she has too many of it, and she doesn't know where to put it and how to use it, she even said those keychains that she received she can use it as earrings some more, because not only was the only one buy keychain for her, the rest are the same...so only for her I always need to think of another things to buy, like one time cap, mug, clothes.....(for bff mah, must be something very different, cannot buy too cheap stuff) and hers one always must be different one...then until that's one time I very smart, since I always go hard rock cafe, I might just buy hard rock cafe shirt for her, not so cheap but also not very expansive, easy!! =]

    7. Hard Rock tees are not cheap leh! For me, I won't be that generous, hehehe (so bad and kiam siap ho? xD), though it's for bff.

Don't get me wrong SK, I still love to read travelogue. Just that if the country is somewhere I have not been to then I will have less ideas to express cause I don't know much ma! But anyway I thank you for the sharing, at least I learn something new, and who knows in the future I will have the chance to go there and that time, I can utilise your travelogue and do some reference! ^^

  34. 我絕對唔會買所匙扣同朱古力做手信囖!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Yes of course, we all love travel especially if it's for vacation ;)
Well, I think I am a 'souvenir person' lo, whenever I go travel for sure will buy something and give to family and friends, including myself la!
But it depends also, if things sold in that country is cheap then I'll buy more, else, just buy a few enough (for me and my family, and may be a few close friends).
I remember when I went US, I bought a lot of kids clothes, some for Aden and one for each of my close friend's kids. Cause the kids apparels at US are so cheap! And some even branded one (of course is American brand la), like Osh Kosh and Gymboree. We went to this outlet and they were having clearance sales some more, one top is like only $3-$5!! Quality is good too! I cannot help but to just grab whatever between that range, then when back to the hotel, baru sort out which one is for which kids, hehehe!
And also when I went Bangkok, same things happen. Clothes there are so cheap I even buy clothes for my friends! Of course only those closer ones la, and for safety purpose, I chose loose top, and normal tees, that I can guarantee my friends can wear, if buy dress/shorts then susah abit lo cause I am not sure whether they'll it or not, and wear or not.
But everything is cheap la, tops, dresses, bags, bottoms and etc. If buy at wholesale price, one top averagely less than RM20. So I thought, why not? Same goes to kids clothes, I also bought each for everyone, and needless to say, Aden got the most la, tee hee! :p

    Replies
    1. So this is what I mean by the pricing, if cheap for sure I'll buy more as souvenirs.
But if go to European countries for example, then different story lo, things are not cheap, so I'll think of other ways to buy souvenir for family/friends. Like, I will choose food instead, chocolates, biscuits, those that comes in big pack and have smaller packs inside, that I can separate and distribute to them, no need spend so much lo, and can at the same time make them happy ;)
But one thing for sure, I'll sure buy at least one thing as souvenir whenever I go. For myself, I love to collect fridge magnet and postcards. So I make sure I will at least look for these 2 things when I travel. As for skincare, clothes this kinda thing, it depends, if too expensive then I'll just give up (Erm may be just one la xD)

I think I already used to buy things for people la, til my friends also say I am too generous already, LOL! My parents always 'warn' me not to buy anything for them when I go travel cause they say they already have everything, and even if I buy things for them, not sure if they will like that souvenir, or 'ngam' them or not, so the best way is no need buy.
But end up I will still buy things for them, hehe!
Then ever since I started become active in blogging, and when I started to have a few loyal readers, I will think of them too, but of course I cannot afford to buy for everyone, so usually I will organize a lucky draw and see who is the lucky one, at least I have the heart and thought to reward my readers la! (I think you remember this lucky draw thingy in my blog, since you are one of my loyal reader ^^ I already organized a few giveaways in conjunction with my travelogue this recent few years).

  36. Ahaha, yes, I agree, souvenir is something people give you, not what we ask for. But ho, I always jokingly 'tease' me friends when I know they go travel, like 'remember my saosun!'! Wahaha, I actually just joking la, cause I think and I can see that's what/how most people are saying, like commenting in FB. Of course I don't expect them to really buy things for me (If got then I don't mind of course xDD). But I'll only do this to close friends.
Now that I think back, luckily up til today, I din't meet anyone who is so muka tembok to ask for souvenir from me, hehehe!

So coming back to the souvenir you sent us, it was actually a surprise la cause I received the items then only I came reading this post of yours.
No wonder ChrisAu's name is in grey, he actually 'donated' his prize! That's indeed generous la, but I wonder why? He got too much prizes already? :p
So lina got the prize in the end~
Congrats to Small Kucing, PH, TM and lina! And myself, hehe!

The candies are so sweet! I can afford to eat one per day, hehe, and it's very gluey! But I love the taste of it, I gave a bit to Aden and he likes it also, of course la, which kid doesn't like candy right? Hehehe!
Then the lavender tea, not yet try, may be tomorrow, guess I'll like it since I love anything lavender.
And the bath salt, too bad I don't have bathtub at home else I will terus open and use it, hehe! But don't worry, I'll use it anyway, just have to figure out how ;)
Then the cloth ar, erm is it to use as cover?

Wah got round 2 some more, this SK sure is very generous ;)

    1. Actually I don't know about the asking one la, but for me hor, if people seriously put a comment there or ask to buy one (doesn't matter joking or not, in the comment how to see the other side is joking or not ooh!!) So every time I saw something comment or ask in person one, I'm sure will keep on thinking about it then die die also need to find one (for others I don't know la, but for me, I feel like just have to be being politely....) and the very sad thing is if can't find one also got to force like must buy something at the airport or something lo!!

But I'm just wondering then if your second round are the same people again getting the top, then are they gonna get the same thing again or different souvenir argh?? Then like that argh...gonna go back cry into pillow cause would never gonna achieve that....

    2. That last paragraph was joking joking only ya...(don't take it too serious...later don't say I very desperate...so before people say it, I got start cut off first)
