Eat It....
This year marks the 20th year I have been staying in this neighbourhood since I was in Form 5 - now you can do the Maths and know my age. I still remember the very first day I moved in, the neighbourhood was not as populated as today. I think it must be the LRT and increasing students of the nearby TAR College that contributed to the population. Eateries and salons dominate the shops in this neighbourhood...
Restoran Desa Setapak
...and this place at the corner still survives through times although many other shops have kept changing owners. Together with another coffee shop a few shoplots away, they have been the de facto places where I find food to eat should there be no cooking done at home.

Last weekend, a few friends dropped by to visit and I brought them there for brunch. I don't usually order much but since there were a few of us, one of the friends suggested that we ordered more food to be shared so that she could try a bit of everything.

I just went to find a table and let them order what they found interesting, afterall I have already tried all the stalls in the shop. The first that was brought to our table was this kampua noodles (RM4.50)...
Kampua
...which looked quite promising. It was still hot and hence we were able to smell the aroma of the lard used to toss the noodles. It tasted good, however I somehow remember seeing the photos posted by this blogger that...
Kampua
...it comes with just char siew and minced meat but not with fish cake slices. Anyway, probably this may not be the most authentic ones like those from its origin. Perhaps someone may want to PosLaju some over to me after reading this? Dijamin sampai esok. *Hint! Hint!* But if someone is not sending, I think I go and kill myself liao. Bye-bye cruel world!!! Sobssss!!!!

Next that came was this char koay teow (RM4.30) served on a piece of banana leaf which smelled so good...
Char Koay Teow
...but tasted just okay. Not the best that I have eaten - at least not as good as those I have had here and here. I would say there were a lot of dark bits that were scrapped off from the wok and they surely didn't look appealing to me. Eyewwwwww!!!!

The pan mee in soup (RM4.70) sold by a couple from China came next...
Pan Mee Soup
...and would be a nice choice on a cold morning. Tasted okay though I would prefer they have served the anchovies separately in a sauce plate. One of the friends saw how they made the pan mee to order and decided to go for an extra...
Pan Mee Dry
...which got us this dry version (RM4.70) that I suggested to go with the fine thread version of the noodles. Despite being a little soggy and oily, we found it better than the soup version, though not better than that I cooked at home. I have had this before and thought it was a little below its usual standard, probably because of the crowd that morning.

And lastly, this was the prawn noodles (RM4.80) that I often like to have...
Prawn Mee
...and of course, recommended to the friends. Indeed tasted very good with the very flavorful soup and I like it also because of another reason - whole prawns (albeit small ones), pork slices, half an egg, handful of beansprouts, kangkung, and delightfully homemade browned shallots to garnish the noodles. Unlike many places which would omit or substitute any of the above with other more readily available stuffs from supermarket shelves. No, thank you.

I would always like to add in the sambal provided into the soup...
Prawn Mee
...that would greatly enhance the flavor and add more body to the soup. I know that would be a little unhealthy for some people. *Wink! Wink!*. Not all the great but good enough to fix my cravings for prawn noodles, as the best prawn mee I have tasted so far has closed down due to the owner's personal issue.

It was so sweet of the friends to drop by and pay me a visit. Overall, we had a great catch up over brunch with nice and relatively cheap food. Do the Maths and the total may not even be enough to buy a meal for one in hip restaurants. Tsk! Tsk! Anyway, we will do this more often, won't we?
this post is a tribute dedicated to suituapui @ ...Still crazy after all these years! 8. STP is definitely a very long winded writer with no flaws in grammars and punctuations etc. I often read over 3-4 times to find fault but his England is so powderful and flawless!! We all need to learn from his writings of here, here, here and here & what nots! .... Wakakakaka

      Delete
    9. Not true. Sometimes got slips also what.... When I spot them (later), I would go back to edit.

      Delete
    10. By the time, I read them you must have corrected with liquid paper many times. Still, your writings still resemble the Queen's English. This reminds me of the old TV drama - "Crown Court". They spoke like you Arthur.

      Delete
    5. I know, I know...not your style, anyway - to blog about your cooking anything, and not much on food as well. No worries, I certainly wouldn't send the same thing lah, tried once already, enough lor...but if anything nice and worth giving, sure I would send to you again. Same with all the other friends, no need to blog about it one. Many of them don't - why, some are not even bloggers. I just enjoy sending things to friends...sharing is caring mah. Right or not, Claire? Wink! Wink! LOL!!!

      Delete
    6. "I just enjoy sending things to friends".. Wink! Wink! Hint! Hint! hahaha.. everyone reads that huh??

but really don't trouble to send and spend money lah.. not cheap to send PosLaju, and once sent, we tend to get very stressed - keep on checking the status to see where the thing is.. and only feel relieve when the recipients messaged to inform receipt~~ sounds familiar?? :D

    7. ...and bomb poslaju when things get delayed - curse and swear at them on their Facebook page and also email them...even the grandfather also kena. But they say dijamin sampai hari esok mah....must keep to their word, people pay for that! If taking one week like that time I sent something to Seremban, better send by snail mail.

    9. TM, the kampua AGM and dinner sounds nice lo, haha! SK, can consider his idea ma! xDD

SK, speaking about Pos Laju, I just had a terrible experience with them yesterday, intended to send something in the noon and when I was there, I saw 4-5 people queueing in front, I think most of them were there to collect the parcels, I waited 10 minutes and I walked away in the end, cause I couldn't bare to look at how the staffs there work!! Taking their own sweet times, showing their 'tak ada apa apa' attitude, and like they haven't taken their lunch!
Service is damn slow!! And to my surprise, my friends encounter the same thing at other areas too! I thought only Taiping one is like this, haiyo! So terrible la them!

    10. Wink wink STP!! What's up?? Heard my name being mentioned..

    11. yalah, i hate going to those smaller post office, because you gotta spend at least 30 minutes waiting there.. i rather travel all the way to the General Post Office, more counters at least, usually i go there before work, so it's early and i always do not have to wait..

      Delete
    12. But Taiping everything also limited one, we only have one main Pos Laju office here, then the post office leh, always so many people one.. Haih~

      Delete
    13. Not just the pos laju, basically gov department is like that, hahaha~~~ their motive to work everyday is waiting for lunch at noon then wait for out of work in the evening, very easy going, don't have to afraid that the boss will fire them or anything, got to get used to them le, what to do!!!

      Delete
    14. Good grief! Like that also wanna cry ka?

We all know SK style mah. He low profile one and he doesnt wanna create jealousy among bloggers mah. He will send email/FB/sms to thank the snder for the things he received but he wont blog about it la. If he were to blog about it...habis satu bulan also cannot finish leh.

If broadcast then others will feel left out pulak

      Delete
    15. aih, the problem is all because we are living in this bolehland lah.. period, fullstop!! haha..

yeah, i am low profile lah, don't like to do that publicly and what meow says is so true.. it can create problems when other people felt left out~~

ChrisAu, dollop is a word lah, mana ada typo, it has nothing to do with wallop also lah..

    10. I'm laughing non stop again.. Yep, I like the word dollop.. A dollop of butter on the roast chicken, or a dollop of ice cream on my pancakes.. I like this word, reminds me of butter, sour cream or mayonaise, hahahaha..

OMG, I'm laughing on Kollop.. Please...

      Delete
    11. maybe STP should invent one Kollop me, and then that would be more famous than Kampua and Kolo!! and till then, STP will be a rich old man, no need to self-pity that nobody sends him stuffs, because he can afford just anything..

The kampua noodles look exactly like hakka mein.. One of my favourites when I go eat in kopitiam.. I will ask for more minced meat, if they allow..But I seldom see hakka mein with “yue peng” (fish cake slices) la..
Haha, when you mentioned “bye cruel world”, I thought of TM.. Go kill yourself and bye to the cruel world.. OMG, I’m still thinking of that statement and almost fell off from my chair again.. Wah, if I’m sick, after reading your post, tak sick already, hahahaha..

Ok, next is your ckt picture.. Hahaha, clever boy, you got ready your links, coz you need a lot of “here, here & here”.. hahahaha.. Wait, got pan mee, prawn mee somemore.. Drooling man!

Actually are they really your friends or you brought your family members there so that they can order all kinds of food, and you can take the pictures, for the sake of writing this post?

I can finish both by myself no issue.. And maybe order a bowl of prawn mee to share.. The prawns look really big leh!

As for the pan mee, I won’t request them to separate the ikan bilis la.. Even of they separate it, once arrive to my table, I will usually throw everything inside the pan mee, gaul gaul, and eat, haha.. Maybe it’s just me, I prefer the ikan bilis to soak inside the soup, for more flavor.. But I won’t leave it till last to eat la.. I will finish up the ikan bilis soonest as possible, else, if leave until the last to eat, the ikan bilis no crunchy liao lor, kan..

That's so not the style, right?

    3. Can excuses him la, because he has to be fully concentrate on how to mimic STP, "the noodles" become like side character only, hehe!!! =]

      Delete
    4. well done, SK! I would love to try all those noodles. They simply look scrumptious!

      Delete
    5. I think that's a typical Malaysian style, having noodles for breakfast, instead of rice, unless nasi lemak la. I also take noodles for breakfast, or bread, cereal if I don't go out.

      Delete
    6. actually i went to "collect" all those photos in the morning, and you know ah, morning i don't take rice (other than nasi lemak), that explains they were all noodles!! and only now i realize, but then all i was thinking was to take as many photos of food possible for this post..

      Delete
  16. Haha ..Once I read this post at the beginning, I know it's a STP clone! Wah ..you can find kampua there ? I thought kampua only found in sibu. Looks good and I feel like trying.

    1. I think it's hakka mein, but he says kampua to make it sound more like STP ma.. Just like piansip, if there's a bowl of wanton, I think he will call it as piansip tpp, keke..

      Delete
    2. got lah, also got Sarawak people come over and start selling Kampua, Sarawak Laksa, Kolo etc.. though i am not too sure about the authenticity, cos i have not eaten the real thing in Sarawak..

Ribbon, it's really kampua and not hakka mien lah.. you've only seen and eaten hakka mien doesn't mean i cannot find it and show here mah~~ tell STP you think kampua=hakka, he will give you a good lesson!! :D

      Delete
    3. Wah, I dare not provoke STP oohh.. Scared.. Later he nag and lecture me here.. hehehe..

Oohh, then piansip also cannot tipu lor.. I was thinking if you order a bowl of wanton, then say it's piansip, dunno will kena lecture mou.. hehehehe..

      Delete
    4. But weird, I don't see any kampua noodles selling at my hometown Taiping. I mean they din't written it's kampua lo. Perhaps only big cities got sell la!

Princess Ribbon, haha, ya later he lectured you baru tahu! :p

      Delete
    5. No lah! Here, there's one place - I think the guy from West Malaysia one...he sold piansip with prawn meat inside, they told me...so I went to eat. Could speak Mandarin only...so I ordered and he said did not have, I tried to explain in my half past six Mandarin...and then he understood - I think he called it suijiao...not piansip with prawns. *face palm* Ok lah, not bad...but never went back again, parking a pain there, very busy area.

      Delete
    6. haha, cannot and don't even think of doing that.. this STP can see every little details of the food.. you want to cheat him with hakka mien as kampua?? you want to cheat him with wanton as piansip?? no way, he can tell every difference in details and give you a good lecture, haha!! correct or not Arthur?? :p

      Delete
    7. I like Hakka mien...and wanton (in soup) too! Different but all nice. Not really a fan of wanton mee though...swimming in the black sauce. Used to tapao, later no more sauce...all gone into the noodles - to me, it's nicer that way!

      Delete
    8. yes you like hakka mien and wanton.. but you love kampua and piansip.. we all understand that.. and wanton mee not necessarily in the black sauce mah, can be in soup also..

      Delete
    9. Yes, yes...I like the soup one - would order that as I am not fond of the black sauce. Now old liao, I love anything in clear soups...younger days, preferred things dry...so wanton mee not on my favoured list.

      Delete
    10. i have no specific preference but rather depends on the mood and craving.. sometimes go for soup, sometimes go for the kicap one..

  17. I also used to hang around the setapak area during the 90s when I was studying at the old UTM branch in jalan semarak. Not sure if I come across this kopitiam. The noodles looks so good here especially the char kway teow.

    2. Setapak really a student area, almost 90% of people walking on streets are students, hehe!

Huh, got those dark bits in your CKT ar? Hmm, I understand it must be not appealing, and in fact very unhealthy! But what to do? Sometimes it's unavoidable, unless if you see too much then must voice out to the tauke lo....

      Delete
    3. yeah, i guess many are and were from TAR college lah.. those who stayed there during studies, and after they graduated they continue staying there.. so my area are mostly the students or ex-students.. yeah, the dark bits, have to pretend i don't see it lor, if too obvious, just picked it and throw away..

okay, a disclaimer here: if you see my logo and URL on the photo, that means those are my own photos lah, large enough and obvious right?? else, i will always put the URL of the website i grabbed the photo from if it's not mine :)

    3. I believe SK took the effort to go there and eat everything (may be not everything) and share those photos la!
Yes, he always post his own photos one, even if taken from somewhere he'll sure give credits, that's what I realize. Me also, just feel that it's a respect to give credits to the original source if we are borrowing their photos.

      Delete
    4. exactly Hayley!! and i agree with you that if we want to use other people's work.. copy & paste their words, or repost their photos, we must give credit lah.. if never bother to give credits, that's actually plagiarism you know??

  22. Finally, a tribute post of Food Mayor in Sibu. I have lots of laugh while reading this post mimicking STP. Very close, except pictures are not large enough.

I love when reading "Not the best that I have eaten....." "No thank you." "Wink Wink, hint hint...." Muahahaha!

Actually this is just part one, part two, SK you can mimic STP writing about the gifts he received from friends. Must be also a very interesting one.

    3. I find the most difficult part in mimicking STP is his very best photography skills. All food has become from heaven when STP posted it in his blog.

Anyway, thanks for letting us know this very fussy Food Mayor is actually a very soft spoken and real gentlemen in actual person. I am so glad to know this.

      Delete
    4. Yes, he sure has lots of signature quotes. And agree with Yan, SK you should make the photos larger!!

STP, I also wonder who will be next, hehe~ I have a nominee in mind, let's see if my guess is right again this time ;)

      Delete
    5. haha, my food photos also not bad lah, but sure not as good as STP's lah.. because he is so experienced and skillful as he takes photos of everything he eats, haha!! and i use my phone to take those photos only..

errr, the photos are big enough lah.. because my space is smaller, but i am retaining that ratio following STP's post leh~~

    6. STP is very famous for his quotes.. really have made a trademark in the blogging world! Well done, SK... I think no one can mimick him as well as you do... certainly needs lots of efforts to get it done.. The post was meticulously written! Thumbs up!

      Delete
    7. i think you can also easily mimic his blogging style lah.. since you also blog about food, that is even easier, no need to look for topics.. just insert all his famous quotes into your stories, and you naturally sound like STP!! muahaha~~

  23. Good day SK and everyone!

Wah, 20th year already? Sure 感情 very deep with your neighbourhood already! Hehe!
I stayed at my old place (which is conveniently located at town area, almost everywhere is within walking distance, eateries, wet markets, hypermarkets, government offices and etc) since birth til I was about 25 years old, then I moved to new house and after got married, I stayed with my hubby and in laws.

Now, I still miss my old house, everytime I passed by that area, sure think about lots of great memories I had there. Even when I dream, I dream about that house, but not my new house, haha!

So I think you also have great memory and 感情 with your house already la hor?
Yes, that area of yours are packed with college students, and that LRT station. I have a few friends who stayed there last time, I got tumpang there also when I went holiday at KL, hehe!

    1. haha, okaylah.. but then people in the city also one kind lor.. even neighbours also seldom get in touch one.. not like last time i was staying in kampung, the whole kampung all know each other one.. and i can say, i know the neighbours next door and opposite only, but then won't go and chit chat with them lor, just hi-bye and smile those type only..

  24. So, this is a tribute to STP, the food king. See the title already know who, 依然疯狂. I think many of your readers give you 'pressure', many of them wanna see the STP post, that's why you came out with this post? Haha, just kidding! :p

Very well done, I can see everything is alike to his original blog, the tone and the way he writes, the fonts and the pink background, and he always put links to his previous posts one, hyperlinks highlighted in pink, and he always uses '.....' one, keke! And also saying 'no thank you' :p
Most importantly, his post is all about food food food only, so very easy to recognize and easy to mimic, totally STP's style! Opps not that I know him very well but I read his blog occasionally, so I can recognize his blog style.
You purposely ordered kampua noodles!! So thoughtful la you ni. Since you mimic him already must order kampua right? 所谓送佛送到西嘛, kampua is signature meal, hehe.
Nice and gentle-spoken person ar? Really? Haha, don't know, have to meet him in person baru tahu lo.
Haha, you actually thank him for teasing you huh? You're very 大量 lo! Good good~

    1. Kampua noodles, me not so interested, Angeline gave me a pack which sent by STP last time and I ate a pack only, now still got 3 packs left, hehe.
But that plate of char kuey teow looks good! They say Penang has the best CKT, have you eaten before? The one at Lorong Selamat, a plate macam RM5 wo, now may be even higher. But I think that one very commercialise already since it's famous, I am sure there're other stalls which sells good CKT with cheaper price.
Taiping also got good CKT, one is with fishballs, another style is with kerang/eggs/prawns. Both styles I also like.
In fact I can eat CKT very often last time, too bad now cannot already cause I very 容易上火, slightly too much heaty food, I'll be suffering from sore-throat, though I drink lots of water and eat fruits everyday :(

Pan mee looks ok too! I love pan mee! Friend taught me how to make the noodles at home but I am just too lazy :p
I love pan mee with lots of anchovies and black fungus! Tried one restaurant at Puchong before, erm Jojo's pan mee I guess? I love their pan mee too, got many different flavor and the soup is good!
As for dry pan mee, acceptable also la but still prefer the soup one.

      Delete
    2. Lorong Selamat RM5??? When was that? Stone Age kah? The last time I had RM8.00 already...and that was a number of years ago. Nothing great also lah, only got many huge prawns - many other places also nice, maybe even nicer.

      Delete
    3. eih, remember STP = Kampua (or Kampua = STP??) or not?? if i am going to mimic STP's style, of course Kampua is the most important ingredients mah.. haha!! i guess if i am going to write a post about STP but without Kampua, that will be so not convincing at all, agree?? hehehehe~~ and the writing part is quite okay lah, just that beforehand, i gotta spend weeks to eat the noodles and accumulate enough photos!! haha~~

      Delete
  25. And that bowl of prawn mee, wow, so many 'liu' inside! I can tell it's good la! Prawn mee must have prawns and kangkung, hehe, and the prawns is already de-shell! Seldom see people do this, usually they leave the tail or head of the prawns.
Yaya, I'll also add extra sambal into the prawn mee for extra umph, hehe!

So you guys actually ordered quite a lot of food! I love eating in a big group, can try different food ma! Here nibble a bit, there a bit, hehe.
If eating alone or with just hubby, choices are limited, sien~
But you must do this more often la, hehe, I mean for me, I love a food gathering cause I love food! Can catch up with friends and at the same time, eat!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. actually that prawn mee is quite good, i like the fact that they give very traditional liu - like the pork slices, eggs, kangkung, and homemade brown shallots.. in other places, probably they give fishcake and those dehydrated shallots bought from supermarket only..

errr, actually the "friend visit" thing is fictitious to make up the story only lah.. i told you, i spent few weeks to eat those noodles to collect the photos, and when enough, i write a story for this post lor.. hahahaha!!
