My Trip to Siem Reap Cambodia in 2008
Many people fled to Cambodia like swarms of bees since the late 2000s. The reason was very obvious where all wanted to have been to the UNESCO Historical Heritage Site Angkor Wat for once in their lifetime. Probably Angelina Jolie did a very good promotion of the place with her smash hit movie "Tomb Raider".

Siem Reap Cambodia
1. In September 2008, my friends Ethan Lee, Steven Chee, Cheong Lee Shan, Tai Kwai Fung and I hopped on the bandwagon and planned a 4D3N trip to Siem Reap. We took Malaysia Airlines because we managed to grab zero-fare tickets and ended up not a lot dearer than AirAsia, so we flew more comfortably and with food all the way from KLIA to Siem Reap. Forget services by the stewards, all Malaysians are treated the same.

Siem Reap Cambodia
2. We arrived at Siem Reap International Airport. This is just a very small airport and I thought it looks more like a resort to me especially with this photo.

Siem Reap Cambodia
3. Of course we went on budget trip and cannot afford to stay in posh resorts or hotels. This is the guesthouse Villa Siem Reap we stayed for the three nights, situated along a road in town which houses a stretch of other guesthouses. Our friend Ethan Lee chose this and all others happily agreed, as we all were lazy to decide. Muahahaha!

Siem Reap Cambodia
4. After a rest in our rooms, we headed out to explore Siem Reap. There were many tuk-tuk gathered in this area packed with backpackers and holiday makers. We bargained and engaged one to drive us around and this was our first stop at the Central Market. Yes, I like going to local markets when i travel because we get to see real local culture in there. Look, I smiled so gracefully. Wakakaka!

Siem Reap Cambodia
5. Of course there were many things to see in that market. I am not going to post all of them here but this particular one. I hope you didn't get a shock seeing these gory chicken feet. Oh, the poor chickens must have struggled so much that they got stroke and their feet straightened to death. Amitabha.

Siem Reap Cambodia
6. We continued to Angkor Wat to purchase our visitor pass that day. Since Angkor Wat was already closed for the day, we purchased the pass valid for the next day and it includes the entrance to a smaller temple opposite. This similar architecture gives a little preview of the bigger Angkor Wat itself.

Siem Reap Cambodia
7. We had to walked up a hill to reach the temple which is famous for the sunset view at the top of the hill. We were already tracking up the hill with many other visitors, and Holy J when we arrived at the top, this was what we saw! Hundreds of tourists sitting down there waiting to see the sunset like they are sitting in the stadium to watch World Cup in Rio de Janeiro.

Siem Reap Cambodia
8. This was the sunset we saw on top of the hill at the temple. Nothing impressive and I reckon we can see this everywhere. KNNCCB but we did stay up there for a while to take some photos and before the sky got dark, all have to leave the temple and descend the hill.

Siem Reap Cambodia
9. It is said that one must not miss the beautiful sunrise at Angkor Wat. We woke up at 4am the next day and leave for Angkor Wat at 5am although all of us were still very sleepy. KNNCCB again, it was cloudy and slight drizzling that morning, all we could see was the dark silhouette of Angkor Wat in the dark morning! We have to wait in total darkness for an hour before the sky gets brighter to take a photo and then went to eateries opposite for an expensive yet lousy breakfast while waiting for Angkor Wat to open for visits. If we knew the weather was not good, we would rather continue to sleep in till late morning, enjoy breakfast before heading to Angkor Wat.

Siem Reap Cambodia
10. Finally time to get into Angkor Wat. I was so angry that I tried to destroy it! Haha! Of course I am kidding, I certainly am not able to destroy this sacred temple which is almost a thousand years old that survived through so many winds and rains. I just did silly poses for photography purpose.

Siem Reap Cambodia
11. Inside Angkor Wat. Many giant stones skillfully carved to form the structures and left scientists and architects with a mystery on how the ancient people completed such an impossible marvel without technologically advanced facilities.

Siem Reap Cambodia
12. Besides Angkor Wat, our visitor passes also allowed us to visit our temples. These huge stones structures carved into statues are placed along the South Gate leading to the Bayon Temple. If you look closely, each of these stones are different. The fourth one looks like one of my schoolmates but I have forgetten his name.

Siem Reap Cambodia
13. We went to another temple, probably more widely known as the place where Angelina Jolie's "Tomb Raider" was shot. This is the Ta Prohm Temple which I personally find more fascinating. Look at the roots of the trees extending like spilled kampua noodles off the plate. This is just one of the many within the temple. Looked artistic and at the same time a little eerie if you thought of something else.

Siem Reap Cambodia
14. All you can admire with the trip to the Angkor Wat and other temples are these amazing stone structures so skillfully carved and formed into massive architectures. You can opt to buy a 3-day pass but I personally think 1-day is sufficient unless you are going to do archeological research in there. My Anay Twilight Man may need 3 days since he likes to admire ancient stuffs.

Siem Reap Cambodia
15. On the third day we went to Tonle Sap, the biggest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. We were put into a boat to see the lives of fishermen families who live on the lake and earn their livings from the lake.

Siem Reap Cambodia
16. The lake is not a calm one but rather choppy and yet it is so common to see lakers standing on small boats, or even just a metal basin, that looked like almost overturning, so firmly and without the fear of falling. Young kids were brought along on the boats to hawk and haggle their own produces to tourists. But please don't come near me with your pet snake! I swear I will pee in my pants! Wakakaka

Siem Reap Cambodia
17. Later that night, since we were frightened by the girl's pet snake, we went to eat snake in a restaurant in town. Just kidding, we didn't do that purposely but it was on the menu when we sat down. Being adventurous, we ordered a plate of python meat for BBQ. I hesitated a while before popping in my first piece of snake meat, taste like chicken but rather chewy. I pretended to be engaged with other types of meat so that my two friends Ethan Lee and Steven Chee finished the rest of the snake. Haha!

Siem Reap Cambodia
18. It was our last night there, the ladies went shopping at a night market nearby while the guys went for a drink at a posh bar in town. It was truly a huge contrast between these posh places meant for tourists and those really run-down places where the local spend their time.

Siem Reap Cambodia
19. Selfie wasn't popular 6 years back, we just camwhored which was the in-thing then. It was a very comfortable bar with huge sofa you can lie any way you may, like Empress Cixi or Cleopatra. The best thing was we had the whole bar by ourselves. Damn, I looked so young then that I radiated red lights like bulbs in a dim brothel! Wakakaka.

Siem Reap Cambodia
20. The next morning we still have half a day before we needed to get to the airport. Ethan Lee, Cheong Lee Shan and Tai Kwai Fung went to a local school nearby to distribute stationery to the poor students. Steven Chee and I woke up late and missed that, so we enjoyed breakfast in the garden of the guesthouse. It was nice I felt so glam like Zac Efron and Channing Tatum meet up for breakfast.

This is a recap of my trip to Siem Reap in 2008. Since it's 6 years ago, I can't remember every detail. Click here if you would like to find out more about the trip.

  1. No Cantonese version today? But it's okay la!!! I been to Cambodia long time ago, can't even remember when it's, but that one is following tour, rushing visit every attraction, seems like barely enough time to check it out or taking pictures!!! I like Cambodia a lot because of its mystery Angkor Wat!!!

    1. 1. I prefer MAS food than AirAsia one, don't know...based on my experience, the MAS food is nicer and after the mail will have ice cream for dessert (guess this could be one of the reason I like it so much, hahaha!!!)

    2. 2. Yup, I do agree with you that the status like those hotel, airport should be like more "high tech" one, hehe!!! But this one like more retro la...different style, feel like more 新鲜!!!

    3. 3. Budget hostel is okay la, as long as it's comfort and the facilities are good, I realized those villas have more feeling of the local cultural style!!!

    4. Jump out from the topic for awhile, I also like TM blogging style, like his newest post, that he shared about the Atomic Bomb Museum at Nagasaki, which really make me have the feeling want visit the place, so informative and attractive!!! =]

    5. Cannot compare MAS and Air Asia la. AA is low cost carrier! LOL

      Delete
    6. Yea, somehow MAS and AA are different, really cannot compare, me taken both before and I'd still prefer MAS. At least it's more comfortable, even though might be slightly expensive than AA.
But then since the MH370 incident, I bet MAS's reputation and business drop significantly?

errr, actually all the plane are the same if you are willing to pay.. haha!! and i don't mind budget airlines also lah, as long as i can get to my destination.. and same to hotels also, no need 5-star but as long as clean and comfy, i can sleep well, that's a good one for me!! :)

      Delete
    11. yes i agree with 小影 that was just an individual case and it's unfair to judge the whole airline, probably it's even safer after that incident because they are sure to imply more stringent security.. I'm not siding but being neutral.. :)

      Delete
    12. Dunno leh...lately there are also many incidents related to MAS.

    13. all airlines also have the same operating problems, it's just how they manage the issues..

    14. A lot of airlines also have problems one, see the American Airlines also have a lot of air crash cases but still so many people taking it, sometimes is not about the airline thing, the aircraft itself also can brought many problems into it, mechanical, air control, pilot themselves!

yeah, really need to be observant and to analyze the styles of different bloggers and try to catch those few phrases that they often like to type in their posts.. and thanks TM, you have given very good tips above!! :p

      Delete
    7. LOL, no la, TM, to me your reputation is not all about KNNCCB la! I think they saja tease you only, hehe!

But SK's style this time really looks like TM, I can say 90% alike, erm, the 10% is still SK's style, it's SK's blog afterall, must keep some for himself, hehe! :p

STP, you seems like want SK to mimic your style! Then it'll be all about food, and also how to cook certain food, I bet this will be a great challenge for SK lo~

Btw, when I first read this post, I had the feeling it's just like TM's style. But I didn't want to comment as it's a free world. Just now when I slowly scrolled down, only then I spotted TM's name. Congratulations, TM! You are the first and the very best friend of SK!

    8. Yes, TM's blog is indeed very informative. I don't cover much even if I blog about my travels. Great job, TM!

      Delete
    9. Yes, Chris. I always prefer to follow tour as I'm too lazy to plan my own trip. But when I travel with my kids, they do their homework. So I don't mind traveling with their guidance.

      Delete
    10. Wenn - but follow tour got disadvantages also la. Got to wake up early and follow their schedules. Want to pang sai first also no time ...lol. then, they bring you to some expensive places to shop.

      Delete
    11. yeah, it's a challenge to mimic the writing styles of others, need to be observant and analyze, and then try to slot in those significant characteristics.. but i find that fun.. at least not doing something i am used to :)

and of course, TM's posts are always nice to read.. he blends in humor into information, great huh??

      Delete
    12. Yes, Chris. Tour package has its disadvantages too. Like getting up very early in the morning. But actually I don't mind as I can get up very early. Furthermore, we will be taken to restaurants which can serve immediately. That's the plus sign. We don't even need to queue up to buy any entrance tickets. Everything is done for us.

    13. i'm used to go DIY trips now.. the last package trip i went was in 1998 to a few countries in Europe.. well, all i can say is, rush and tiring for that.. i prefer to do it on my own.. :)

    1. Hmm, I can say I am an adventurous person when it comes to food but then for rare animal meat, I'll seriously think twice, or thrice. I know some country offers bizarre meats like snake meat la, crocodile meat la, pangolin meat la and etc, to them it's very normal. But to me, I won't simply eat them, animals are living things also ma.

Anyway, it depends on situation also la, if the meat is safe and hygiene, and it's cook 'heavily', like BBQ or with lots of sauce/gravy, I guess I am willing to try a small slice, just to taste, cause those sauce can cover the meat 腥味 already, at least not that hard to swallow down the throat!
But I wonder which one is the python meat? The darker color on top? Or the one at the bottom with lighter color? Is that meal expensive?
Wah your 2 friends finished the meat? They must be very adventurous and 'cincai' when it comes to food?

      Delete
    2. yeah, there were three types of meat there.. the ones on the right are croc meat, okay lah taste like chicken.. the ones on the left are the snake meat.. the darker color ones, i can't remember what that was already, but acceptable.. only the snake meat was a bit gerli to me.. actually i also don't eat 野味 one, but then dunno why we were so bold and ordered the snake meat.. haha, maybe do as the locals do lor.. but we later saw balut (neh those duck egg but the duckling already started to form inside), dare not eat lor..

But you sure know TM very well, can tell you guys are really friend, friend到打band!:p
Hmm, I am not close at all to TM but from the way he blogs, the way he pose for photos, and his very 慈祥 punya face, I can tell he is a nice and sporty person.
I speak from the bottom of my heart ar, so please don't think I am bodek-ing anyone, haha! xD

So this is a travelogue back in 2008? You can still remember quite a lot wert, consider very good already.
If for me, sure forget a lot liao.
But I do remember I went to Spain in 2008, called me 'suaku' but that was my first time flying ;) Some more flied for 12 hours like that so I can remember the destination very well. 朋友都说我没飞过,不过一飞就飞那么远那么长!^^

Hmm, you guys are lucky that your friend Ethan Lee chosed this villa, at least someone to do the job... For me I'll also become lazy when it comes to planning the itinerary and choosing the hotels, best if someone offers to do the job, akaka!

Oh, 'taxi' there also called 'tuk tuk' ar? Just like Thailand lo?
Then you remember hows the fare?
I also love visiting local markets, sure got lots of things to see/eat, and things there are sure cheaper one.

I'm same as you, very lazy to choose attractions or hotel, like this coming weekend trip, I told my friend we go there to find hotel...hahaha!!! Don't have to research or book anything first!!!

    3. hehehe, actually i have a lot of things that i cannot remember lah.. but after looking at the photos, they actually help me to remember more lor.. i am sure very fine details we may not remember, but the big picture is sure still there lah.. and you have been to Spain!! wow, you always fly far far to travel one lor, hor?? :p

choosing the hotel can be a challenge lah, because just can see from the photos and if got reviews, can be confusing because some say good some say bad.. and somemore, scared booked a lousy ones and friends not happy.. big responsibility leh~~

      Delete
    4. Hahaha!!! Yah lo! Hayley if fly also fly the far far one, don't count the Bangkok one la, I remember before it you went to Norway and Denmark, those Europe countries le!!!

Yah la! Can't trust the officially website pictures one, they always must show the best online mah, where show the so so picture, maybe need some photoshop or what!!! Guess reading the review is one of the good choices but I heard before some of the hotel/hostel create fake ID then give very good comment wor! And some if people give bad comment, the hostel/hotel would reply and explain also ask the person to pull off the bad comment also!!! So no unfair one lo!!!

      Delete
    5. yalor, if she go travel hor always go far far one, at least 8 hours flight those type.. those Bangkok ah Haadyai ah, are just short excursions to her nia.. hehe!!

yalor, the websites sure put very nice photos lah.. and the review sometimes also may not be credible.. so really have to depend on luck and actually do more research lah.. that's where bloggers come in, usually give frank comments (unless sponsored type)..

      Delete
    6. Hahaha!!! Yup, like that's one that I heard the beauty product drinks has very very bad taste, but no one mentioned that the taste was that bad unless the person try it themselves then only get to know about it lo!!!

      Delete
    7. yalah cannot trust sponsored post that much, the real review ones are more convincing.. but then there is always bias and different people different taste la.. you won't know it until you really tried on it.. :)
