2014.05.12 | 愛心便當

[Volume 9 Issue 5, #1892]
okay, i am actually not bragging about my Doraemon snacks (bought for me from Japan by a friend), but i just want to talk about lunchbox.. yes lah, this is a mock-up of course, a container containing food is a lunchbox right?? haha.. i guess we often see people posting photos of very nicely done lunchboxes, the combination of colors and the variety of food makes it so wholesome and delicious, some even come with cartoon characters so cute you are not even willing to eat.. you know what?? i was a kid who wanted to bring lunchboxes to school so badly, yet i was just given pocket money everyday to get my three meals (breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea as my school time was from 7:45am till 5:30pm) settled at school canteen.. i always envied classmates who brought nice lunchboxes to school and shared with each other.. i feel contented to bring my own lunchboxes, even if i were to prepared them myself, be that just a few pieces of cheap biscuits or junk snacks.. kids nowadays are surely lucky to have their loving parents prepare lunchboxes for them to bring to school, though i suppose many may not even appreciate.. many times it is so true that, when we have something we don't care to treasure, but only regret when we have lost something..

Coz for all my life when I was a kid, mum only made bread with butter & jam for me to take to school.. No tuna or egg-mayo or sausage bread leh.. Really.. Considered a luxury if there's sardine or tuna sandwich, or hotdog bun, or egg tart.. Yep, my life is that "cham"!

Snacks? When I was in school, I brought the coffee from home in a tomato sauce bottle...and no food, no lunch boxes. Had to wait till I got home...for lunch. But of course, I would have had a wholesome breakfast before leaving home for school every morning. My mum would wake up before dawn to make sure everything would be ready on the table by the time we all got up...

I know when I was in primary school they sell kopi o and milo in school canteen la. still remember it was 25 sen a glass.

But now not sure school canteen still selling kopi to kids or not coz now so many things no allowed any more.

My school days not many mom pack lunch box for their kids. Even if pack also will be mostly fried rice or noodles. No nice nice bento like nowadays punya modern mom

      Delete
    6. I have seen parents tapau nasi lemak, and put Milo in nescafe glass jars (instead of tomato jars, haha), and brought it into the class and accompany their kid eat while waiting for the class to start.. I envy too, well, as long as it's not bread for breakfast.. At least the kid still had nasi lemak!!!

    7. yours certainly a newer generation than mine or have better living kids than my school, Mine was mostly poor and average income kids. So, not many parents will have time to bring lunchbox to school and accompany the kids to makan.

Just tapau lunch box kira as good jor lor my time.

    8. Coffee! When I was in primary school. Every morning, my mum would brew a pot of Chinese tea for my father and a pot of coffee for everybody else...and she would fill one tomato sauce bottle of the coffee for me to take to school - maybe she thought that would help keep me awake in class. Hehehehehe!!!!!

The thing was tomato sauce bottles are not leak proof...so if it fell onto the side in my school bag, habis...everything would smell of coffee permanently even though all dried up.

    9. Yes, kids these days are so fortunate - have you seen all the bento lunches the mum prepared for them to take to school? Gee!!! My time, I did not even get a slice of stale bread. Eat breakfast at home...or nothing at all till I came home for lunch. :(

      Delete
    10. Yes , kids are very fortunate but also pampered nowadays. The mom woke up early and painstakingly decorate the bento box , with a mixed of little food here and there.

    11. STP, nothing at all till go back home to eat??? No la, kids nowadays very smart...my second nieces, one day my sister forgot to give her money for lunch, then she will go see her teacher, ask teacher can borrow her Rm1 or not because she doesn't have money to eat...then of course the teacher borrow RM1 to her!!! So when she got back she ask my sister for money to return to her teacher then she just know the story...we all siblings were saying if like last time if we've no money for lunch then we just let it hungry till we get home lo!!! But now different already lo!!!

    12. 小影,how old is your niece? Well, I must say kids these days are indeed smarter and 精灵!Like your niece's case, its not a bad thing at all, at least she knows how to survive! And she is such a good girl of being honest and return the money to the teacher (though just RM 1 la).

  4. Oohh, today’s topic quite nice too.. Lunch box.. When I was a kid, I never had any money to take to school.. I only started taking money to school when I reached secondary school.. I forgot how much, but it was very little.. Even til college, dad only gave me like RM100 a month only.. The rest was topped up by my bf (now hubby)..

But shhhh, my parents never knew we started dating when I was in college..

    1. Anyway, back to your lunch box and packing food to school.. Eh, I’m totally opposite from you leh.. When I was a kid, I envied those who brought money to school leh.. They could buy whatever they wanted.. I remembered when I was a kid, there was NOT even one day my mum did not pack food for me to school.. And please, it was just bread and butter & jam.. Or peanut butter & jam.. Or cheese.. That’s all..

    2. Morning school: For breakfast, ate at home.. Mum will make a cup of milo with nestum.. Or Milo with soda peang.. Then school bus came and took me to school.. The night before, mum/sis already made the bread, then put inside the fridge.. If there was tuna or egg mayo, it was considered as a luxury already.. Then will have that in school for recess.. After school, back to the house, sometimes mum fetched me home, sometimes the bus.. If mum fetched, she would tapau rice, put inside a container, and I would eat it when I go up the car.. Back home, terus mandi, and sleep..

If afternoon school, more or less the same.. Morning wakeup, drank a cup of Milo or what.. Then around 11am+, mum would bring me down to have mixed rice (chap farn), then back to the house to shower, etc.. School bus comes to pick me to school.. Mum already bought buns or made bread (as usual) and would have that for recess.. After school, come home, dinner..

    3. There… No money.. Huhuhu..

      Delete
    4. I remembered this for the rest of my life.. I stole money from my aunty’s house coz I was desperate to eat canteen food! Yep, I stole money! I was 9..Mum warned aunty not to give me any money, so aunty had to cook lunch for me and pack bread for my recess..

Was in afternoon school.. Mum dropped me to aunty’s house coz she needs to work, and couldn’t fetch me to school (not taking the school bus yet that time).. I stole some coins when my aunt was in the bathroom.. I don’t know how she found out, I guess the coins must be getting lesser everyday..

I was having a great time at school that week, buying food that I like, like curry puffs, ice cream, Coke, Mamee, keropok lekor…

Then the next day, when I reached aunty’s house as usual, I saw a note at the study table (the usual place I put my bags when I arrived).. It says: Here is RM1 for you, if you want money, just ask ok? Don’t steal. We won’t tell your mum, don’t worry.

      Delete
    5. Gawd.. I still took that RM1 anyway and bought my favourite food in school that day.. My cousins and aunt never told my mum, and I never steal anymore.. Scary.. If they’d told my mum, I guess I won’t be here today.. Dead from canning already..

      Delete
    6. When I was a kid, RM1 can be used to buy so much food.. 30 cents for a bowl of noodles (mee sup, curry or prawn mee flavor).. Then 10 cents for ice cream batang.. 20 cents for a packet of soya bean.. 20 cents for a curry puff (my favourite), then 20 cents left for Twisties or Mamee.. Gawd, heaven! Of course I don’t get RM1 everyday.. When I was older a bit, I only got 50 cents per day.. On days I needed to stay back for school activities, I think I got RM10 for a week that week.. means RM2.. I remembered I was 16.. Gawd, 16 years old and just RM10 per week? Yep, that’s correct.. Enuff for me to get a plate of nasi lemak (without chicken and other stuffs) and some keropok lekor..

    7. wah like that every morning your mom so rajin make lunch box for you to bring to school ya?

well the grass is always greener opposite field leh.

Those who brings money will wish to have lunch box and those who bring lunch box will wish for money

I wonder if there is such good friends in school that they would swap lunch box or not?

for me i dont really miss lunch box like SK la. Maybe coz not many of my schoolmates brings that. almost everyone also buy from canteen. So I dont really envy la those who brings lunch box

Then when I see kids buying sandwiches, I go crazy again, was longing for sardine sandwiches so much lastime you know.. But kids ma, I dunno how to ask mum to make lastime, dunno why.. I only remembered telling her I gian nasi lemak.. She will say oohh spicy la, heaty la, sore throat la, cannot eat.. Banyak hal one..

    10. But now, when I'm working (for so many years), I only started to bring back lunch box to work about 3 years ago when I worked here.. Coz all the aunties brought their own lunch box, and I just go with the flow.. First, they are sick of canteen food.. Second, sometimes they guy don't go out for lunch, so they stay in too.. Third, even if go out, come come go go still the same food, so they get bored too.. So sometimes they prefer bringing own lunch box..

To be honest, I'm not a fan of lunch box, coz from young already eevryday bring own food to school, but come here, no choice, I just follow what others are doing, go with the flow, then bring bring har, bring until today lor..

    15. Hmm actually lunchboxes is not just applicable to schooling time la, I know many working people will also bring own lunchbox to work. Come to think of it, it's much more cheaper and healthier! Though it requires us to cook and all la, and some even must pack them ready the night before to avoid all the rushing during the morning.
But if do some calculations, we can actually save a lot after some times, as the saying goes sikit sikit lama lama jadi bukit ma!! Also can save on petrol, no need to go out for lunch, can just stay in the office and eat, enjoy the air cond, I did that quite often when I was working last time. Also, this is a good time to chit chat and kepo kepo with other colleagues, even online!! Cause we can't do those during work hours ma! Hehehe :p

Erm, of course, if everyday also like this, then will become a bit boring la! So it's ok to go out also once a while, may be once every week? Can take the time to relax and see the outside, catch some fresh air (though mostly they are polluted air =_=), recharged then back to work station!

      Delete
    16. Hayley, you are right. I reckon that.... we adult should take bento to work. this one really save alot of money.

Last time people will tease us when we take our own food to work... at a corner everybody busy gossiping hey this Angeline never goes out for lunch... so stingy meh?"... So just don't care what people say. We do the right thing, nothing to be worry about. So I suggest we take our own lunchbox to work is fine with me lor... ok werd...Open my lunch box, sitting in front of the pc and type type and read comments...shiok also with air conditioned sum more...

  5. Morning all ! Errr ... Lunch box ? No way for me as I find it too sissy when I was a kid. I prefer pocket money where I can buy my own food (or toys) ...hahaha. ok la, maybe during my time, lunch boxes are pretty simple. Just a slice of sunshine bread with kaya or jam or butter.

    1. Same here, I don't find it sissy, I find it "no face" (mou min) ahh, teehee.. Ok, maybe it's just me.. Everyone in the class brought money for recess.. 3. Agree, maybe it's just me (better say first, later kena bombed ahh).. Really, I really feel "mou min" when I was a kid.. No money, just bread..When recess comes, everyone know liao, oohh this fella not going to the canteen coz she doesn't have money.. I will drool when I see kids having ice cream and soya bean when they walked back to the classroom after they have their noodles at the canteen.. Damn !!

    4. why sissy leh? Unless your lunch box pink color with loads of love or girlie picture la LOL. Then that would be sissy la

spending money is cool meh? I dont find it having money buy food in canteen is cool leh. It's just something that ones does...buy and eat...nothing to feel cool about lhe for me. Like that how about the poor kids that cannot afford to buy food but eat school provided food?

      Delete
    5. Meow, really leh.. Spending money is cool leh.. Kids who bring money to school considered very cool (well, coming from someone who never took money to school for recess before).. Every morning when I come to school, I always avoided going to the canteen.. Go canteen for what, no money to buy food also.. Somemore go there can smell the nasi lemak sambal or toast bread smell, wah, can go crazy.. And when kids walked back to the class with a piece of karipap in their hand, I so longed to have one bite leh... Kesian dou......

    8. well....like i've said...grass is always greener the other side. See, SK....he wish for lunch box to school also dont have leh.

But i think a well balance will be nice lor.

Like some days pack lunch box for the kids when have time. And at other times give them some money to spend ..to buy food from canteen

now heard some school have canteen prepared meals. each month parent pay a certain sum and the kid just go canteen eat. Hmm..is it a compromised of the two worlds?

      Delete
    9. But the prepared meals always repeat one...then after the kids have it few times already, they'll feel bored and complained then don't want to eat it anymore...my second niece is like that lo, so she had it for like a month then she said don't want already!!!

      Delete
    10. Agree with Mamarazzi, the grass is always greener the other side, too much of something is also not good, 物极必反ma!

Yea, kids these days are too fortunate, can complain and the parents will do the changes. If during my time, complain also no use, sure the elderly will say something like 'you want you eat, if don't want no need to eat, if you starve then it's your business', hehehe!!

  6. During my time, I didn't have lunch boxes to take to school... my mom gave me 30cents each day and one bowl of noodles around 20 sen and 10 sen for tidbits... that saved her the trouble of preparing breakfast cos it was not easy to take care of 6 kids at one go.. :)

I'm not complaining, but I took food from home to school all my life, if given a chance, I would not wana take food to work now, but sometimes, cannot avoid la.. Due to the environment and "traditions" of the office.. Sometimes just have to follow and go with the flow with what others are doing..

I agree with you, a container containing food is consider a lunchbox, haha! But eh come to think of it, why is it called lunchbox? Cannot call dinnerbox? Or breakfastbox? Haha xD
But I think lunchbox sounds better la! :p

As far as I can remember, I hardly bring lunchbox to school when I was young... Like you, I settled meal at school canteen. Speaking about school canteen, I suddenly miss my primary school canteen very much, haha! Food was so much cheaper that time, a bowl of laksa cost only about 50 cent! And got lots of snacks!
You remember how much was your pocket money? Hmm, mine, if not mistaken, is about RM 1... Of course sometimes I brought some snacks to school so from here can save a bit already. RM 1 for a pupil that time is consider quite a lot already!
Now, if you give a pupil RM 1, he will probably give it back to you, LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Actually I think lunchbox is not so popular back then, I mean not many parents prepare lunchbox for their kids...
But now, it's quite opposite... Cause nowadays it's all about health and also on savings (as things are getting expensive). Parents now become more health conscious and will prepare lunchbox for their kids, actually it's kinda good also la, can save a bit and also can prevent their children from being over spend. You know la there're just so many seduction out there (snacks, soft drinks) and not cheap some more...

Plus, there're just so many lunchbox ideas these days!! Some are really so cute and pretty, seriously really not willing to eat them lo! 1. Lunchbox or say the other way of making bento set for kids definitely is an awesome idea of giving the kids the encouragement to love their food more. No matter is biscuit, cakes, buns, if only plain bread also is very good enough.

      Delete
    2. My perception is very simple. Kids are going to school to learn and train to be independent on themselves. Lunchbox is the happiness for them to fill their hungry tummy. Why? Kids are easily attracted to those nicely done lunchbox...Every mummy will try to make nice and creative one for the kids. I'm sure the kids love to go school and always remind their mummy to make them lunchbox everyday. Indirectly, kids love to eat more greens and fruits rather than always eating those unhealthy snacks...

    8. 愛心便當 really got 愛心 one...doing it with many loves. How can us not appreciate it right? Mummy spends so much time, making the shapes, cutting and preparing the ingredients at night. Then wake up early to assemble the things in the morning. It's really time consuming one. I will feel sad lor, if my son didn't appreciate our lunchbox we've prepared for them. huhuhu.....

At least we have some snack to munch, for me is alright.. Even if is just biscuits or junk food as you mentioned. Haiya once a while spoil our kids with thsoe items really make them feel more happier don't you think?

      Delete
    9. Actually my concerns are so many things need to prepare for just one lunchbox. I would prefer to do or prepare more than one and probably four is the best. Let me elaborate more here, well it is a logic thinking lar…
Let say we kiap 2 slices of bread with jam or peanut butter. Then we must cut out a heart shape or bear shape…Then the excess pieces what will you do with it? Unless I can cut before I spread the jams, the balance I still can use for making bread pudding… Tak kan so few pieces I will make bread pudding with it. That is why if is to make lunchbox I would prepare 愛心便當 for 4 personS. At least the excess is a lil bit more to prepare for other stuffs. It is a waste if just throw it away. As such, mummy will be always chuck the pieces into her mouth as her early breakfast. But hor how many times, mummy will have to eat the excess stuffs???
Like the seaweed, we can punch all types of shapes – starts, small round shape becomes the Panda’s eye and so on… So the rest leh… what you should do with it? Browsing and searching for lunchbox ideas already took half day, then if to think about the excess thingy…lagi worst lor… Some I’m sure will just throw it away or and again mummy here pula chuck all inside her mouth. Nom nom nom.
We’re not like Japanese, they have so many ingredients to prepare which I personally thought that those items are their daily use stuffs. Their culture is liddat. Even if just a bento, those are their daily consuming food… their normal comfort food. But for us we have to take our time to explore the hypermarket to get the ingredients (if we are seldom cook type mummy).. Then we can’t buy just one item, but need to buy the whole packet… So think again how long you wanna keep the things? Furthermore, rushing to Daiso to get the rice moulds and etc….cost money some more… if you’re planning to do more than one time ok lar…

  30. Talk about my time, my dad resigned from his previous job and runs his own business – sundry shop in an estate area after that. So mummy and daddy always not around when I was schooling that time – busy taking care the shop which is situated far away and always come back in the evening around 6-7pm. Furthermore, they often travel about 50mins to reach the place – far from the town. So my brother and I are very independent to settle our own things then. My mom didn’t prepare lunchbox for us… but every morning definitely she will made us milk before we go to school. If possible my mom will cook early in the morning, so we can have our lunch when we get back from school. Other than that, we settle our own things after that. So most often I prepare my own lunchbox, my brother will just had his food during recess time. My pocket money that papa gave to me everyday… because I made my own lunchbox, so I kept RM2 everyday…. Once a while when I my piggy bank reach RM80-RM100, you know what I did? I didn’t save it into the bank but I pass the money for my parents again because they runs the sundry shop needs a lot of small changes…So I give them back lor… and start saving another round again lor…

I love making them egg mayo sandwich to school.
